It was a couple of youngsters who played key roles in Farmingdale‘s 7-3 victory over Port Washington today. Catcher Robbie Manetta came to the plate with the Dalers leading 4-3 in the seventh and launched his first career varsity HR over the right field fence to open the game up. He also drew two walks and played well defensively.
Freshman RHP Justin Rosner threw very well over five innings, allowing 0 ER with two strikeouts, but he did not factor in the decision as the Vikings tied the game up in the sixth inning against reliever Nick Carbone on an RBI single by Ryan Meth.
The Dalers responded right back with a hits by Angus McCloskey and Carbone, before a tie-breaking RBI single by Mike Dortz. The freshman came up to the plate with runners on the corners and he smacked one over the fence to break it open as his brother watched from the dugout.
“It felt really good off the bat,” he said following the game. “It gave us a good lead and solidified the game for us.” The freshman noted that he has been taken under the wing of several of the upperclassmen as they have been showing him the ropes.
Port Washington starter Mitchell Levine allowed two runs in the first inning on an RBI single by Mike Manetta and an unearned run. The Vikings answered back with a run on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Russ Kindler to score Jackson Trenaman. They tied it up in the second inning, when they took advantage of three infield errors with Connor Hertzwig scoring on one of them. He led off the inning with a single.
Both pitchers settled into a pretty good groove. After a 35-minute first inning, the pace of play really sped up as both teams went scoreless in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
The Dalers got one on the board in the sixth inning on a bases loaded walk to score Robbie Manetta to give them a 3-2 lead. The Vikings tied it up in the bottom of sixth, leading up to the four-run seventh.
With the victory, they improve to 11-7 on the season, while the Vikings fall to 9-8.
