Power Rankings Volume 9

This was a rough week for local colleges in general. There was some long losing streaks, especially from the Div-I programs. Still, a couple teams took advantage and will rise up in the rankings because of it. Here’s our ninth installment of the Power Rankings…

The Elite-

  1. St. Johns (Record: 29-5, Stock UP)

They won all three games this week. They are coming off a 15-run offensive attack, which tied their season-high. They already have four players with over 50 hits (Jesse Berardi, John Valente, Michael Donadio, Jamie Galazin) and a team 2.59 ERA.

Trending UP-

2. St. Joseph’s (Record: 21-10, Stock UP)

They have steadily risen up. After winning four of six games this week, they have proven they are for real including a gauntlet of back-to-back Skyline double headers against Old Westbury and Farmingdale. Lou Doria had a monster week. After his two-HR game yesterday, he’s up to five HR and 30 RBI on the season with a stellar slugging percentage of .718. Josh Outsen improve to 6-0 with a 1.26 ERA. The quartet of he, PJ Martino, Nick Clemente and Brandon Lubrano has lived up to the hype. They are the favorites to return as Skyline Champs at the moment, although Farmingdale gave them a run for their money.

3. Maritime (Record: 19-10, Stock UP)

What else can be said about Brian McLaughlin? He’s up to .463 with seven HR and 39 RBI to go along with a a Ruthian slugging percentage of .832. They get another chance to show what their made of this weekend against Farmingdale.

4. Farmingdale (Record: 18-13, Stock UP)

They showed their toughness by defeating St. Joseph’s in Game 1 of their DH today. Matt Seelinger and Matthew Constantine combined on the victory. Those two give them a chance to beat anybody, but they also have pretty good pitching depth behind them. Don’t write them off yet, and they have another big weekend with Maritime coming up.

5. LIU Post (Record: 20-16, Stock UP)

They went 4-2 this week with an 11-inning loss and a two-run loss so it easily could’ve been a 5-1 or 6-0 week. They showed why it’s important to have pitching depth as they needed just about all of their arms to get through the week. Jake DeCarli threw another gem, out dueling Ron Bauer on Saturday and they won on a walk-off single by Kenny Daley. DeCarli is up to 66.1 IP, he has really been a stopper and a workhorse for them. He and Noah Lorenzo have combined for half of the team’s wins. Rob Andreoli continued his incredible season and he’s up to 53 hits on the season. He’s been getting a lot of attention from scouts, although he isn’t eligible for the draft until 2018.

6. Suffolk (Record: 17-8-1, Stock UP)

They were back to their old ways which includes run-ruling teams in six or seven innings. They had four of those this week. They are hitting .335 as a team with a .454 SLG. Joseph Murphy is 3-0 with a 1.08 ERA and 27 K in 25 innings to lead their rotation. Chris Mott is 4-1 with a 2.23 ERA as well.

7. Nassau (Record: 14-9, Stock UP)

Joe Minucci continued his amazing season with a no-hitter yesterday. The East Meadow grad is now 5-0 on the season with a 2.42 ERA. They also have a .327 team AVG and .446 SLG. They are looking like a very well-rounded team.

Rough week-

8. Adelphi (Record: 21-18, Stock DOWN)

They lost three of four to AIC, with the lone victory coming yesterday thanks to a gem by T.J. Santiago. They’ve been lifted from some great relief work from David Butler and Michael Tarpey recently. Offensively, they’ve been carried recently by Steven Withers, who is up to .322 with 49 hits on the season. Eric Hassell, Brett Malm and Jon Iadevaia have also been swinging the bat well. They will look to right the ship against Southern Connecticut and Queens this week.

9. Fordham (Record: 18-18, Stock DOWN)

We put them in the Elite category with St. John’s last week and they followed that with a five-game losing streak–albeit by a combined 13 runs. They will look to turn things around against Yale and Rhode Island this week.

10. Stony Brook (Record: 17-19, Stock DOWN)

They were swept by Hartford this week, but it was only by a combined six runs. They will look to turn things around this week in a busy week that includes a big series against Maine.
