The defending state champions were defeated in a crazy week of baseball. The best part about that? The season’s just getting started. Here are this week’s top 5 teams in Nassau Class A.
5. Plainedge (4-2) (Last Week: Unranked)
Do you believe in miracles? YES! Plainedge did the unthinkable last week in which they upset the defending state champions, 10-2. Not only did they beat them once, but they were one play away from walking away with 2 wins last week. Expect to continue to see big things from this young Plainedge team, specifically Billy Wildeman and Joe Cottone. The Red Devils have their biggest series of the year next week against Division.
4. Division (6-0) (Last Week: 5)
Division continues to impress as they start the year off 6-0. Because of that, they will move up in this week’s power rankings. Division’s DJ Melgar and Sean Paprocki look to continue to lead the Division lineup as they will face Plainedge in a crucial three-game series. Ace Brandon O’Brien will look to dominate once again in game one of the series.
3. MacArthur (6-0) (Last Week: 2)
Although MacArthur hasn’t faced a real challenge yett, it’s easy to see that they are for real. Several players on this team are off to a hot start, specifically Justin DeMaria and Bobby Lewis. MacArthur has their toughest series of the year this week against Garden City.
2. Carey (6-0) (Last Week: 3)
After sweeping Jericho last week in convincing fashion, it’s very likely that Carey will be the only undefeated team in Nassau County. With that being said, they move to No. 2 in this week’s power rankings. AJ Vincenzi and Dom Rutigliano have been dominate on the mound thus far, and will look to continue that next week against Hewlett.
1. Wantagh (5-1) (Last Week: 1)
Nobody panic, this Wantagh team isn’t going anywhere. Every team has that one pitcher that they can’t hit well, and for the defending state champs, they have been beat by Molloy-commit Billy Wildeman two years in a row. Lucky for the Warriors, they still have Jimmy Joyce, Anthony D’Onofrio, Anthony Fontana, Trevor Fagan, and much more. Therefore, there is no need to assume that Wantagh will have any trouble the rest of the season. They should have an easy three-game sweep next week against Glen Cove.
