As the clouds parted to make way for a beautiful day at Bethpage Ballpark, Rocky Point took the field against Newfield for a non-league match up. Rocky Point was carried to a 10-3 win by the arms of James Weisman and Colin Brodsky, who allowed just three hits between them, and a strong offensive outing–particularly from the middle of the line up.
Not only did Weisman get the win, he drove in the first run of the game on what appeared to be a triple, however on appeal he neglected to touch first on his way around the bases and was called out. Weisman worked well with the lead, walks got him into a couple of jams, but he didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning.
Rocky Point took a 1-0 lead into the third when they began to open the game up. First baseman Brian Forbes drove in two on a double to right center, Zack Perri followed him with an RBI triple, and Ryan Maciascek added the inning’s fourth run with a single. They added two more in the fourth, one on a misplayed grounder hit by Forbes, and the other on a deep double to left by Perri.
The fourth was also the inning Newfield got their first hits and first runs. With one out Weisman walked two Newfield batters, and a single up the middle from Gunnar Widercrantz got them on the board. Shortstop Kyle Johnson followed Widercrantz with a single of his own and Weismans day would end after 4 1/3 innings of two-run two-hit ball. He struck out four and walked five.
Rocky Point got those runs right back in their half of the fifth as a couple walks set the stage for a two RBI single for Dillion Cassipy. They also added the tenth and final run on a wild pitch in the next at bat.
Newfield tried to get back into it in the sixth scoring one run thanks to a single by Michael Manzolillo. However, Brodsky, who had been pitching since Weisman left the game was able to shut them down with minimal damage. Newfield’s final opportunity in the seventh ended when Brodsky induced the game-ending double play.
For Rocky Point, Cassipy, Perri, and Weisman all had multiple hits. And while no one tallied more than one hit for Newfield pitcher Bobby Vath struck out the side in order in his lone inning of work.
After the game head coach Andrew Aschettino said that, “What we did a good job of today is they stayed inside the ball well, and the majority of our hits were up the middle or the other way… A couple of little things we’ve got to tighten up before next week again, but it was a good performance against an excellent baseball team.”
