Nassau Class AA Power Rankings (1st Edition)

Well, it’s official. The first week of baseball is in the books. With a ton of surprises that took place in Class AA, let’s take a look at the top 5 teams in Nassau County.

5. Oceanside (2-0-1)

After a surprising tie to Port Washington, Oceanside falls to number 5 in the first released power rankings. The Sailors will continue to lean on younger talent to help them get through the season. With series’ against Freeport and Farmingdale coming up, Oceanside is expected to remain in the top 5 for quite some time.

4. Calhoun (3-2)

Although Calhoun dropped 2 games this week to the Hawks of Plainview JFK, it’s easy to see the potential in this team. Year in year out, Calhoun is constantly underrated, which seems to be the case again this year. If their pitching can hold the fort, this will be a scary team come mid-May.

3. Herricks (3-0)

Although it’s still early in the season, Herricks looks to be a legitimate threat to be a top-5 team for the majority of the season. After sweeping Valley Stream Central with ease, Herricks will enter its toughest stretch of the season in which they face Calhoun, Plainview JFK and East Meadow. These three series will determine if they are true contenders or pretenders.

2. Massapequa (4-0)

Perhaps the most talented team in the county, Massapequa ends week 1 with an extremely close spot at number 2 in the first released power rankings. Not only is their lineup loaded from top to bottom, but their rotation is too. Don’t expect Massapequa to drop from the top 2 spots the entire season.

1. Plainview JFK (5-0)

After sweeping defending the county champions and winning the first 2 games against Calhoun, it’s safe to say the Hawks are off to a hot start and have claimed the #1 spot in this week’s power rankings. With the return of Matt Butigan in Plainview’s previous game, this team just got a whole lot scarier. The Hawks have a bye week after winning their first 5 games to start the season.
