The first week of the season showed significant promise for some teams, and not so much for the other teams. There’s a ton of talented teams this year in Class A, but let’s look at the top 5 teams after the first week of play.
5. Division (3-0)
After an impressive sweep over Glen Cove in which the Blue Dragons scored 31 runs all together, they have cracked the top 5. Although this Division team may not have the talent as previous Division teams, they still need to be taken extremely seriously. South Side will be the Blue Dragon’s next victim, as they look to start the season off 6-0.
4. Carey (3-0)
Carey started the season sweeping New Hyde Park–as they were expected to. Carey is the clear favorites to win Conference A2, and they aren’t expected to be removed from the top-5 anytime soon. They will have their toughest series of the season next week against Jericho.
3. Lynbrook (4-0)
With a convincing sweep over Lawrence and a double-digit win over Valley Stream North, the Owls have cracked this week’s top-5. As well as Carey, Lynbrook seems to be the most talented team in their conference, and the clear favorites. They will look to make it 6 straight double-digit wins as they have two more games against Valley Stream North this week.
2. MacArthur (3-0)
Don’t sleep on MacArthur. Don’t you dare sleep on MacArthur. Aside from the defending state champions, they are an extremely talented team with a ton of depth that can go deep into the playoffs. They will look to sweep Great Neck South this week before having their toughest series of the year against Garden City.
1. Wantagh (3-0)
This should be no surprise to anybody. In fact, if this team loses a game all season it’ll be a surprise. The team full of 4 Division-1 commits will be the easy favorite to win the county and state championship. If all goes as expected, they shouldn’t lose their No. 1 spot in the power rankings for the entire season.
Billy Joel
Lynbrook beat a poor Lawrence team that didn’t want to be in a regular division. They requested relief and were denied. The owls maybe talented and well coached but I wouldn’t put them in that spot based on the Lawrence series and winning against Vsn third starter while lynbrook had their number 1 pitcher going.
