St. Joseph’s Shuts Out Maritime in Crucial Skyline Double Header

The St. Joseph’s Golden Eagles had everything going right for them on Sunday as they took two 7-0 wins over Maritime. The pitching was stellar and the top of the order was electric. These two conference wins were huge for the Golden Eagles as they move to 13-7 on the season with a 7-1 conference record. These two teams will presumably be battling for the Skyline Conference up to the end of the season.

You couldn’t have asked the top of the Golden Eagles’ order to be more productive in game one. Anthony Bonilla, Matt Burnett, Paul Britt, and Lou Doria combined for 11 hits, five RBI and six runs scored. Britt and Doria had monster days recording a combined seven hits between the two of them. Tyler Crafa also had a hit in the game.

“I thought our guys came to play from the first inning,” said Head Coach Rick Garrett. “They put the bats on the ball and that’s very important in this conference,” he added.

The offense was stellar, but it may not have been as impressive as the pitching performance that Brandon Lubrano put together. A complete game shutout with nine strikeouts while only allowing five hits is almost as good of a pitching performance as you can get. He showed incredible command of the zone with his fastball and kept hitters off balance with his breaking stuff. His record improves to 4-1 on the year as he continues to be one of the better arms in the conference.

The Maritime offense was quiet all game only recording five hits. Lubrano was doing a fantastic job keeping them off balance and not allowing any hard contact. Connor Alwan was the only hitter to record two hits while Steve Semler, Brian McLaughlin, and Phil Russo each had one.

Travis Bruinsma did not have his best stuff this time out. He threw six innings allowing seven runs on 11 hits with only three strikeouts. Most of those runs came in the seventh inning where he seemed to have lost a bit of his command. This loss was his first of the season as he still hoists a very impressive 5-1 record on the year to go along with three Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week awards.

Game two was a pitcher’s duel leading up to the bottom half of the fourth inning where the Golden Eagles put up two runs in the inning and continued to score in a pair of consecutive innings. A.J. Ammirati and Josh Outsen were battling in the beginning of the game and neither refused to give in until about half way through the game. Outsen was lights out for the Golden Eagles going the full seven innings without allowing a run on only three hits with eight strikeouts. He thrived in having control over the outside part of the plate with a tailing fastball and a hard breaking ball. He remains undefeated on the year at 4-0.

Every player in the Golden Eaglies starting lineup contributed to the team’s run production. Anthony Bonilla, Matt Burnett, and Paul Britt all had two hits and an RBI apiece. Doria was the story of the day though. The Privateers could not find a way to get the strong lefty out. His only recorded out on the day was in his last at-bat with a fly out to center field. Doria, Dan Campanelli, Anthony Raucci, Dylan Piscitelli, Tyler Sanderson, and Tyler Crafa all had hits in the game as well.

Ammirati battled hard for the first few innings of the game until the St. Joe’s offense took over. He threw six innings surrendering seven runs on 12 hits with only three strikeouts.

The bats for Maritime could not find an answer for Outsen in this one as they were only able to pick up three hits in the game. Matt Costleigh, Steve Semler, and Brian McLaughlin were the only ones able to muster a hit.

St. Joe’s will look to continue their hot streak as they take on CCNY on Tuesday as Maritime will look to rebound against Lehman on Tuesday as well.
