April 7th Recap

An exciting April night as St. John’s nearly plays two games in one, Farmingdale sweeps a doubleheader, and the bats spring to life for Stony Brook and both Nassau and Suffolk County Community Colleges

Division I

St. John’s Wins 14 Inning Marathon vs Creighton

Creighton jumped out to an early two-run lead, but St. John’s fought back and pulled out a win in extra innings. The Red Storm’s pitching settled in after a rocky first to shut down Creighton’s bats for the subsequent 13 innings, giving St. John’s a chance to win in the top of the fourteenth.

Singles by Troy Dixon and Anthony Brocato put the Johnnies in position with one out in the game’s final inning. Robbie Knightes struck the deciding blow when he singled through the left side which allowed Dixon to come home on a bad throw by Creighton’s left fielder.

Down 2-0 at the time, St. John’s first got on the board in the fourth on a single up the middle by Brocato. They tied the game in the seventh, when Jamie Galazin drove Dixon in on a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Dixon led the charge with three hits, and Knightes, Brocato, Jesse Berardi and Josh Shaw all followed with two hits apiece.

After giving up two runs in the first starter Sean Mooney hit his stride ending the day with seven innings pitched, two earned on six hits and five Ks with two walks. Joe LaSorsa then took over for 2 2/3 scoreless innings and Joe Kelly earned his first win of the season by shutting down Creighton for the final 4 1/3 innings.

St. John’s showed their determination and patiences with this win tonight, the pitching settled in and did exactly what was asked of them, give the offense a chance to win.

This series will continue tomorrow night at 7:30 at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska.

Stony Brook Defeats Sacred Heart: 9-3

The Seawolves’ bats came alive at home for their win against Sacred Heart University today. Nine runs on 12 hits combined with some quality pitching helped Stony Brook creep closer to .500.

A scoreless game was broken open in the third when a wild pitch sandwiched between singles by Andruw Gazzola and Bobby Honeyman brought in three runs for the Seawolves.

They added three more in the fourth, an inning that opened up with back to back triples by Michael Wilson and Toby Handley. A sacrifice fly by Brandon Janofsky brought Handley in for the second run of the inning, and Honeyman capped it off with another RBI single.

Sacred Heart came back with one in the fifth, but Stony Brook answered with one of their own on an RBI double from Handley. Sacred Heart tried to get back into it with a two-run seventh inning, but again the Seawolves matched them in the bottom of the inning. Handley drove in the first run on a single, ending the day a home run away from hitting for the cycle. Janofsky then drove in his second run of the game on his second sacrifice fly.

First baseman Casey Baker matched Handley’s three hits going 3-for-5 on the day and scoring two runs.

Starter Sam Turcotte got his first win of the year going 6 2/3 innings, striking out nine and walking two while allowing three runs on five hits. Cole Creighton closed the last 2 1/3 innings allowing two hits without giving up a run.

Stony Brook will continue this series with Sacred Heart tomorrow with a doubleheader at home beginning at noon.

NYIT 9th Inning Rally Falls Short vs Georgetown: 6-4

Down three in the ninth the Bears attempted to mount a comeback on Georgetown’s home field, but fell short after a promising start to the inning. NYIT loaded the bases with no outs when a single from Joey Fusco brought in the inning’s lone run. However, Georgetown’s closer settled in to retire the next three batters without giving up a run.

Ben McNeill drove in the first run for the Bears in the third, his single to right scored Fusco who went three for four on the day. NYIT even took a 3-1 lead in the fourth, they scored two runs, one on a double from Jake Lebel and another on an error on Fusco grounder.

Matthew Bartnik contributed two scoreless innings in relief, but the offense was unable to complete the rally. These two teams will continue this series tomorrow afternoon at 1 P.M.

Six Run Sixth Sinks Hofstra vs Towson: 10-2

Hofstra drops the first game of their second conference series with a home loss to Towson. Towson out-hit the Pride 19 to seven as Hofstra’s bats were unable to keep up.

Down 2-0 in the third Hofstra first got on the board with an RBI fielder’s choice by Steven Foster. Townson got that run right back in the fourth, but the Pride battled back with one of their own on a double by starter Teddy Cillis.

The Pride was very much still in the game until their nightmare sixth inning. Towson put up six on Hofstra and that would spell the end of the Pride’s hopes for the day.

Mikey Riesner lead Hofstra with two hits in three at bats, and relievers Seamus Brazill and Michael James combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings to end the game.

This series will continue tomorrow at Hofstra at 1 P.M.

Adelphi Scores First But Can’t Hold On vs STAC: 3-1

Steven Withers lead the game off with a single and came around to score on a ground out by Robert Vani thanks to his great baserunning. However, Adelphi would only muster up one more hit for the rest of the game in their loss to St. Thomas Aquinas College.

Adelphi’s pitchers Tom AmbrosinoChris Lemorocco, Ed Baram and Andrew Sesto combined to give up just three runs while striking out eight, but they were out-dueled by STAC’s starter John Bednarek. Bednarek pitched phenomenally getting the win for his complete game effort.

Farmingdale Sweeps Lehman In DH: 14-4 & 5-3

Two seven-inning wins for Farmingdale in their doubleheader with Lehman today. Game one saw the Rams tally 20 hits, scoring in every inning.

Nicholas Soriano had the biggest day at the plate going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a triple, but Tyler Schrimpf was right behind him with three hits, two RBIs and was a home run shy of the cycle.

Left fielder Vincent Rice was a perfect 3-for-3, he also scored twice and drove one run in. The rest of the outfield, Cam Alfano and Nick Attardi, combined for four hits in four at bats, one RBI and four runs scored. First baseman Dalton McCarthy was two for three with two RBIs and two runs scored, and second baseman Domenic Palumbo only had one hit but drove in two and scored once himself.

It was a parade of singles as the Rams tallied just three extra-base hits. Brandon Ernest got his first win of the season for his contribution of 3 1/3 one-hit innings.

In game two Farmingdale jumped out to an early lead and was able to fend off a late inning rally from Lehman. The scoring began with a double from Christopher Reilly in the first, he then came around to score on a single from Soriano.

They added another run in the second on a sacrifice fly from Attardi and one more in the third on a Schrimpf single. Lehman finally got on the board with a three-run sixth, so Farmingdale added one more for insurance when Ryan Osborne scored on a wild pitch.

Daniel Egan got the start for the Rams in game two and hurled three one-hit innings with three strike outs. Ryan Mallon earned his third save of the year with 1 2/3 perfect innings and three Ks to close it out.

Tomorrow Farmingdale will play another doubleheader, at home with Mount St. Vincent this time, game one starts at noon.
