Suffolk CC Crushes Tompkins Cortland

They called the game between Suffolk CC and Tompkins Cortland CC at nearly 11 P.M. last night after seven innings with Suffolk leading 11-3. This was the second game of a double header for Tompkins, and Suffolk’s fist game since March 4.

Designated Hitter Nicholas Siragusa helped Suffolk jump ahead in the first inning when he drove a two-run opposite-field home run over the fence in right center field. They never looked back from there. TCC scored a few runs of their own, but with the way that Suffolk was hitting there was never any doubt in the outcome.

It felt like Suffolk was loading the bases ever inning. In the third a run came in when Matthew Riselvate got plunked in the back, and  a bad throw on an attempted double play caused two more runs to come in rather than get Tompkins out of the inning.

It was 6-2 after three, but Suffolk wanted a little more breathing room. Singles by Jeff Towle and Riselvate scored a run each, and a double to deep left by Jason Conti brought in two more. Another botched double play in the sixth inning allowed Suffolk another run leaving them with 11.

While the offense was clicking Suffolk’s pitching and defense was insuring there would be no comeback. Lefty Joseph Mattero earned his second win of the season, Mattero had a bit of trouble locating his pitches to start, but was able to settle in and consistently work out of trouble. For instance in the bottom of the fourth Tompkins had loaded the bases with one out and was threatening to close the gap. However, Suffolk was able to escape the jam with a bouncing ball which became a 5-3 double play.

“I love the fact that we’re swinging the bats.” Said head coach Eric Brown after the game, “We hadn’t played for, oh my god about two weeks now so this is good… [When you don’t play for so long] you kinda lose touch with all the stuff that you’re working on. But we’re going to be fine.”

Suffolk will square off with Tompkins again this Wednesday, again at Baseball Heaven but at 3:30 P.M. this time.
