Scouting Report: Chris Mott

Player Name: Chris Mott
Position: RHP
School: Sachem East ’15, Dowling ’19

Chris is a 2015 graduate of Sachem East. He is a 6’0″ RHP.

He begins his delivery with his hands held low and he takes a long step back as he prepares for his leg kick. His eyes are locked in on the target through out the delivery. His leg kick his up around letter high and his hands are head high while his back leg is tall and firm. His front foot is pointed up, although it should be down. He has a bit of a hesitation between balance point and falling action. I would prefer to see continuous movement because the sudden burst can cause inconsistencies in the delivery. He is able to get very good push off his back leg as he drives towards home plate. The arm circle is very long–he points it all the way down to the ground but there’s nothing wrong with that. The one thing that can be changed is staying closed a little longer–he has his hips completely rotated prior to his heel hitting the ground. His stride is very long and he gets the most from his height with it. The arm action is high 3/4 and he gets very good extension. He falls off to the first base side a little and is not prepared to field a comebacker.

In his May 19 start in the playoffs, he worked mainly in the 84-85 MPH range with the heater and 75 MPH with the CB. He sprinkled in a couple of changeups as well. He threw 3.1 IP in this game, and the opposition did a very good job of hitting his mistakes. In terms of a pure “stuff” standpoint I came away impressed with his fastball/curve mix but it was definitely perplexing how a predominantly underclass team could square up so many pitches against a mid-high 80s fastball. My inclination is that his premature hip rotation exposes his fastball to the hitter and enables them to get a great look. There were only seven swings-and-misses, with three of those coming on offspeed pitches. Both of his strikeouts were on breaking balls.

He allowed five hits, but if there was a silver lining it’s that he only walked two batters.

Mott retired the first two batters of the fourth inning before allowing a first-pitch HR on a fastball and he walked the next batter on a 3-2 count which ultimately was enough for the coach to replace him.

Mott will be pitching in the ECC in the fall. He has a strong arm and pitchers will less velocity than him have excelled in that conference, but–in my opinion–he will need to stay closed for a little longer in order to create more deception and become the dominating pitcher he can be.
