Player Name: Andrew Mundy
Position: RHP
School: St. John the Baptist ’15, Hofstra ’19
Mundy is a 6’0″ pitcher for the Cougars. He has a three-pitch arsenal that he attacks hitters with. His delivery is reminiscent of New York Yankees’ ace Masahiro Tanaka.
He enters his leg kick by kicking is straight out rather than up but he still gets into the position he needs to. He keeps his back leg firm and his eyes locked on the target with his glove head height.Once he gets to the balance position, he kick his leg out towards the plate prior to beginning his falling action, which is a bit unique. He drops his back leg and gets significant drive from his back side. He has a good stride length and lands with his foot on line with home plate. The arm angle is low 3/4 and he has a quick recoil after delivering the pitch
In the All Star game, he was among the most impressive. He had a 1-2-3 inning while striking out the side. The first batter did give him quite a battle, though. After getting ahead of him with an 85 MPH fastball for strike one, he fouled of 6 consecutive pitches–five of which were fastballs. He struck him out on a 90 MPH fastball that was painted on the outside corner.
The following batter fell behind 0-2 on a fastball and curveball. After fouling back a high fastball, he struck out looking on an 87 MPH fastball. The tail on his two-seamer was incredible and very difficult for hitters to pick up on.
The third batter watched an 86 MPH fastball for strike one, a 76 MPH curve for ball one, a 75 MPH changeup for ball two, swung through a 77 MPH curve for strike two and swung through an 88 MPH fastball for strike three.
Very solid outing and very impressive. He repeated his delivery and threw strikes consistently. The two-seamer at 88 was too much for the hitters to handle.
