Scouting Report: Zach Decicco

Player Name: Zach Decicco
Position: P
School: Half Hollow Hills East

Zach is a 2017 graduate of Half Hollow Hills East. He is 5’10” 185 lbs. He is coming off a tremendous summer 2015 season in which he went 5-0 with a 0.18 ERA for the LI Titans.

He begins in a relaxed position with his hands held letter height. He takes a quick step along the rubber as he prepares for his leg kick. His leg kick is about nearly shoulder height  and his foot is tucked in towards second base. He keeps his eyes locked on the target and his back leg firm. During his falling action, he gets good drive from his back leg and propels himself directly towards home. He has a very long arm circle, bringing it directly down and towards center field. The stride is sufficient for his height and he steps slightly across his body which creates deception on right handed hitters. His arm angle is directly over-the-top, similar to former MLB pitcher Steve Trachsel. The extension is decent, it could definitely improve a little and that will only help his velocity. He falls off to the first base side.

He worked in the 79-80 MPH range with the heater. He did spike a couple fastballs but he kept the ball on the bottom third of the strike zone. He displayed good command on his offspeed pitches. The curveball was tight and impressive, coming in at 72 MPH. That will certainly be a weapon at the next level. The change up was 74 MPH–I would like to see a little more of a difference in velocity between that and his heater.

Decicco  was unable to crack to HHHE rotation as a sophomore due to their stacked rotation but he will be a force in 2016. He has put up tremendous numbers during the travel season. As long as he makes those slight improvements in the delivery and decreases the velocity on his change up, he can be a Division-II starter.
