Player Name: Liam Pulsipher
School: Center Moriches
Position: LHP
Liam is a 2018 graduate of Center Moriches HS and son of former 1st round pick Bill Pulsipher. Liam is 6’0″ and 155 lbs. He appeared in two games with the varsity team as a freshman in 2015.
He has a very smooth delivery, it is reminiscent of big leaguer Jeff Francis. He begins with his hands held letter high and a step parallel to the rubber. He keeps his eyes locked in on the target through out the delivery. At balance point, he has his hands held high and his leg kick is about letter height. He has a firm back leg and his momentum is heading towards home plate. He possesses a long arm circle and a very good stride for his height. He gets solid drive from his back side. He lands with his front foot facing home plate. His arm angle is high 3/4 and he has terrific extension for a young pitcher. He finishes square to home plate.
Pulsipher was throwing in the 78-80 MPH range. At his height and young age, that is more than enough to succeed. I expect him to add velocity as he physically matures. His delivery does not allow for added velocity due to its efficiency and lack of flaws. Most importantly, his two-seam fastball displayed exceptional tail, which will make him equally effective on left and right handed batters.
He showed a very advanced circle change up that had fading action and he showed a feel for spotting it on the outside corner. Additionally, there was no discernible difference in his arm speed. His curveball had the proper amount of spin but it was extremely slow–typical for left-handed pitchers–which could make it easier for hitters to sit on.
Pulsipher played with the Long Island Titans this summer. He faced very good competition and performed well.
In my mind, he is a Division-I pitcher. He simply needs to add some more velocity, which will come with maturation, but as it is, he has the prerequisite skills and pitchability to be a dominant pitcher at any level.
