St. Dominic’s Bats Stay Hot, Win Fifth Consecutive Game

It might be a conference known for pitching, pitching and more pitching but St. Dominic’s eclipsed double-digit runs for the fifth consecutive game–all wins–and defeated Chaminade 14-3 with their ace, Kyle Young, on the hill.

“They’ve had our number for the last year now, so it’s good to finally get off the schneid,” said St. Dominic’s Head Coach Jimmy Goelz. “We’ve been working on our swings and it’s coming to fruition.

On a day Kyle Young did not have his typical great stuff (6 IP, 4 BB, 6 hits, 5 Ks), the offense did more than enough off the Chaminade pitching staff, who used the day to get in work for their top four starters.

The Flyers actually got out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI triple by our No. 4 ranked prospect, Straton Podaras, who drove in Anthony Greco (3-for-4, 1 run).

That was their last lead of the game.

The Bay Hawks scored four runs in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Nick Gulotta, a bases-loaded HBP and a two-run single by Jimmy Conway (3-for-4, four RBI). They added four more in the fifth on a run-scoring hit by Justin Rodriguez, RBI single by Justin Cancel and double by Conway.

After going quietly in the sixth, they put up four more in the seventh to really break it open on a couple bases-loaded walks and another RBI hit by Conway.

Young navigated in-and-out of trouble and made the big pitches when he needed to.

“He’s got good pitchability for a kid so big and he’s really in control of his body for a kid his age, it’s pretty amazing,” he said.

“The thing about last year is maybe he wouldn’t recover as well but now to come out the next inning and look like he didn’t walk anyone the inning before, so he’s REALLY matured a lot,” he added.

The Bay Hawks will need some help if they want to get the top-seed and a bye. Goelz noted that it is very important for their pitching staff to get the bye so they can line up their arms the way they want.

With everyone making the playoffs in the conference, the remaining seeds have less importance.

They also know they can play with anyone after today’s win.
