Dylan Resk took a slide of faith on a low-sinking liner. If he caught it, there would be two outs in the 11th. Rather, it scooted under his glove and to the fence in left field which allowed Hunter Dolshun to score the go-ahead run and Andrew Casali to scoot to third base with a triple.
The Retrievers tacked on two more runs and won 6-3 over rival Stony Brook, who was looking to complete the three-game sweep.
“That was a big win for us,” said first baseman and Long Island native Anthony Gatto. “Not only for conference but it gives us great momentum moving into the mid week and a big weekend series up at UMass-Lowell,” he added.
Under the constant rain, both offenses took a while to get going.
Stony Brook’s starter, Tyler Honahan, pitched much better than his 6.86 ERA would indicate. He had terrific command of three pitches and made quick work of the Retriever’s lineup for the first five innings.
In the sixth inning, though, he ran into trouble.
After walking Gatto with one-out, he allowed a single to Dolshun. After a strikeout, Casali lined a single to let field to score Gatto. Casali attempted to advance on the throw, and catcher David Real‘s throw went into center field to score Dolshun.
Honahan ended up going 5.2 IP, allowing 1 ER on six hits, three walks while striking out five.
In the top of the ninth, A.J. Wright launched a long solo HR to left field to increase the lead to 3-0.
It appeared like the Sea Wolves would sleep walk to a shutout, but they woke up in the ninth. Casey Baker lined a one-out single, Johnny Caputo moved him up with a single of his own. David Real made up for his error with a two-run double down the right field line to cut the deficit to 3-2. Bobby Honeyman followed with a double of his own, down the left field line to tie the game up. The next two batters were retired to send it into extras.
Both teams went quietly in the 10th, but in the 11th, after Dolshun’s single to lead off the inning, that’s when Casali’s triple scored the go-ahead run.
Kevin Kernan was tagged with his second loss of the season.
With the loss, the Sea Wolves fall to 19-20 on the season while the Retrievers improve to 20-20.
