April 27 Recap

Here is a recap featuring today’s college action…

Division I:

Stony Brook dropped a high scoring game to Fairfield earlier today by the score of 14-9. Kevin Kernan started the game for the Sea Wolves going 2.2 innings surrendering just two hits, while giving up two earned runs. The rest of the staff faired about the same with each pitcher giving up two or more runs in their innings of work, besides Teddy Rodliff who threw a clean inning. Fairfield only out hit Stony Brook by one, 15 to 14, and also made two more errors on the day (3). The sixth inning was huge for Fairfield as they put together six hits for seven runs. The best inning offensively for Stony Brook came in the fifth as they scored five runs on four hits. Andruw Gazzola (4-for-4), Casey Baker (2-for-5), Johnny Caputo (2-for-5) and Jeremy Giles (2-for-4) all faired well at the plate for Stony Brook. Each batter in Fairfield’s lineup recorded a hit besides one, and also forced six walks on the day as well.

NYIT lost in the first inning as they surrendered eight of Lehigh’s 16 runs on the day before having a chance to bat. The game was fairly sloppy as both teams combined for 10 errors, with NYIT making almost as many errors as they had hits. The bears threw eight pitchers today with their starter, Chris Johnson, taking the loss, giving up three earned runs in 0.1 IP. The Bears also walked 11 batters on the day, equaling the amount of hits that they surrendered. Lehigh took a conservative approach, splitting the nine innings across four arms. James Bleming (3-for-4), John Scarr (3-for-5), Jeff Shanfeldt (2-for-4) all found success at the dish for Lehigh, with Shanfeldt driving in five runs.

Division II:

Dowling posted 13 runs in a victory over Bloomfield this afternoon, winning 13-5. Both starters in today’s matchup struggled, giving up nine earned runs combined in 5.2 innings. The difference was in Dowling’s pen, as they were able to shut down Bloomfield’s offense, while Bloomfield struggled just as much after replacing their starter. Big days at the plate from Robert Morse, Rob Costanzo and Jonathan Tenaglia powered the Golden Lion’s offense to their eight run win. Those three batters combined for seven RBI’s on the day, with Michael Richter adding a pair as well.

Molloy dropped a game today against Felician by the score of 3-0. All three runs were scored in the seventh and eighth, as most of the game went by with clean slates. Felician put together a single, hit batter and a double to score their first run of the game. Their second and third runs were driven in by an inside the park homerun off the bat of Jason Polgano. Molloy put together only three hits in the game and drew just one walk. Felician’s pitching staff, lead by their starter Drue Brooks, combined for 11 strikeouts and surrendered just one walk.

Adelphi kept their hot play going as they secured a big conference victory over Pace by the score of 8-3. Two three run homeruns were hit by Rob Vani and Alex Zykoff, which helped the Panthers keep moving forward in their playoff push moving into a big conference series this weekend. Ed Baram threw 4.2 innings, giving up two earned runs, while walking three and striking out four. Adelphi’s bullpen, which actually featured their number one and two starters in TJ Santiago and Jonathan Mulford, threw clean innings to finish off the game. Michael Stack also had a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-3 and scoring a run.

LIU Post earned their 18th victory of the season beating Concordia, 11-4. LIU split the nine innings evenly between three arms, while Concordia threw seven guys, each for one inning besides Josh Browning, who threw two. Post saw great offensive production from their lineup, as all but two of their guys got hits. Concordia saw a grouping of players get a hit, but none of them recorded more than one on the day. Dave Brehm had a huge day at the plate going 4-for-5 with four RBI’s.

Old Westbury took two today against John Jay by the score of 18-5 and 9-2.

Game one featured six Panthers with multi-hit games including all but one batter getting a hit. Old Westbury threw Vinny Caputo and Danny D’Onofrio. They combined for 10 hits, four earned runs, seven strikeouts and just three walks. John Jay threw five pitchers, each giving up at least two runs. Jay made three errors to combat one from Old Westbury and surrendered a total of 19 hits. The third inning was the lone inning for Old Westbury in which they hadn’t put a crooked number up on the board.

Game two featured a lights out pitching performance from the entire Panther staff as they surrendered just one earned run on two hits and three walks combined. Joe Boscia and John Dell’Olio, the eight and nine hitters, did most of the damage on the afternoon combining to go 4-for-5 with five RBI’s and three runs scored. R.J. Davila of John Jay was the only batter to record a hit.

Rob Mandich, of CCNY, had a solid day at the plate going 3-for-5 with two RBI’s and a run scored.

Game two lasted just seven innings and was a much lower scoring game. Nick Girardi had a stellar performance on the bump for the eagles, giving up no hits, no earned runs and striking out 11. The rest of the staff faired the same as they only gave up one hit, a homerun off the bat of Joseph DeCarlo. CCNY’s starter, Jeffrey Diaz, gave up three earned runs in two innings, while the rest of their staff gave up one in the remaining four innings of the game. The tale of the tape is that CCNY had their struggles at the plate, striking out a total of 16 times and got just one hit. Anthony Schuler went 2-for-3, while five of his other teammates pitched in with a hit as well. St. Joseph’s has improved to 18-10 on the season and has just three games remaining.
