Huge day for all three divisions on the island with series openers being played…
Here is a recap of today’s events on the diamond.
Division-I:
Stony Brook dropped the series opener to Bryant University by a score of 14-5. Freshman James Karinchak of Bryant University improved his record to 8-1 with a stat line that included four earned runs, four walks and six strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched. Connor Doyle took the bump for the Sea Wolves giving up seven runs–six of which were earned– while walking three, striking out three and surrendering only six hits. The bullpen faired the same as they gave up a combined seven earned runs on eight hits and five walks. Stony Brook was solid on the offensive end besides the fact that they left a total of 13 runners on base. They put together 15 hits and drew four walks.
Division-II:
Dowling was defeated in their series opener tonight by Saint Thomas Aquinas in a 4-2 battle. The game was tied 2-2 moving into the eighth inning before a single and a walk lead to a throwing error from the pitcher, Mike Jeanetti, which scored both runners and iced the game for Saint Thomas Aquinas. Dowling recorded just four hits, while drawing an equal amount of walks. Saint Thomas Aquinas put together eight hits and drew five walks. Aquinas took a fairly different approach throwing four guys, splitting the nine innings up in portions. Dowling threw Cody McPartland for seven strong innings, in which he surrendered two earned runs on seven hits, eight strikeouts and three walks. Although Jeanetti struggled in the eighth with the throwing error, he did strikeout all three batters that he faced in his lone inning.
Molloy won their series opener against Mercy College by a score of 5-2. Molloy saw big offensive days from Kevin Podell and Brian Murphy, who went 3-for-5 and 3-for-4, respectively. Anthony Alberghina added two hits, while Angelo Navetta, Nicholas Gonchar and Christian Todd all added a hit, with Gonchar going yard. Anthony Catinella improved to 5-3 with the win, going strong for nine innings striking gout four, walking one and only surrendering the two earned runs.
LIU Post took game one of a three game conference series against Queens College by a score of 8-5. Jake DeCarli went the distance pitching all nine innings, while surrendering five runs (3 earned) on 10 hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Queens threw three pitchers on the afternoon. The starter gave up eight runs, four earned, on seven hits, two walks and three strikeouts. Relief gave up just one hit in the four remaining innings. Big offensive days from Lou Doria and Jimmy Mendyk directed the Pioneer offense to the eight runs. They each drove in two runs, while scoring one on their own, combining for six of the teams eight runs.
Division-III:
Old Westbury took on Purchase College in a conference double header, taking both ends by a score of 6-3 and 5-1, and improving their record to 21-12. In game 1 Tyler Kapela earned his fourth win of the season going 5.1 innings, while giving up three earned runs, striking out three and walking three before handing the ball over to Nick Dorcean. Dorcean threw 3.2 innings, surrendering just two hits and striking out five. Paul Rapoli has a huge day at the plate going 3-for-4 with two RBI’s. Dean Sheridan matched Rapoli’s performance at the dish, adding an RBI and a run scored. Five other Panthers added a hit, totaling 11 on the day. In game 2 Old Westbury scored five runs on six hits and drew two walks. The starters on both ends went the distance, with Trey Pizzutello winning the duel. He surrendered just one earned run and recorded five strikeouts, while improving his record to 4-2.
