It was a very busy day on Long Island for the college teams.
Here’s a quick rundown of the action.
Division-I:
Stony Brook improved to 7-1 in April and 15-13 overall with an 8-1 victory over LIU-Brooklyn. They scored their eight runs on nine hits. Andruw Gazzola stayed red-hot with a 3-for-3 day with 3 RBI and a walk. Toby Handley had two hits and scored two runs. Jack Parenty drove in two runs.Kevin Kernan started and received the win. Tim Kranz, Cole Creighton, Nicholas DiEva and Aaron Pinto all contributed in relief.
NYIT won 6-5 in 12 innings over Penn. Louis Mele had three hits and scored two runs but the story of the game was the incredible performance of Joe Daru. The senior smacked his fourth and fifth HRs of the season as well as a double. He scored three runs and drove in two while drawing a walk. Matt Diaz threw five innings in relief, allowing just one run and recording the victory. The Bears are now 14-17 on the season, they will play NJIT this weekend.
Hofstra‘s bat busted out in a big way with a 14-4 victory over Manhattan. Bowie Matteson won his team-leading third game of the season. The Pride smacked 15 hits in the game including HRs by Max Dolente and a grand slam by David Leiderman–who had three hits and drove in six. Steven Foster had three hits, scored three runs and drew his 32nd and 33rd walks of the season. He entered the day 12th in the nation in walks. Brad Witkowski had two hits and scored four runs, while Mat Annunziata had two hits and scored two runs. The Pride improve to 9-24 on the season.
Division-II:
Adelphi bounced back after yesterday’s loss with an 5-1 win over Pace. They were led by Eric Hassell’s big day–he smacked a HR and an RBI double along with a single. His RBI double gave them the lead in the ninth inning, Alex Zykoff broke it open with a three-run double. He had two hits.
Matthew O’Connor threw a gem–seven shutout innings, just three hits and no walks without a strikeout. Still, he didn’t record the victory because he left in a 1-1 game. Jonathon Mulford recorded the victory, and T.J. Santiago came on to throw a scoreless ninth.
Division-III:
Old Westbury easily defeated Vassar 10-3 to improve to 18-9 on the season. The Panthers compiled 12 hits–two each by Jesse Russo, Dean Sheridan and Kevin Lao. Tommy Zeigen had only one hit, but it was a bases-clearing triple. He is leading the nation in triples with eight.
St. Joseph’s and Farmingdale State split their DH tonight which was a makeup from this past Saturday’s rainout.
The Rams took Game One 7-0, behind a combined shutout from Matthew Constantine, David Otero and Kenneth Simco. Otero received the victory–he threw three hitless inning with two strikeouts. Dalton McCarthy hit a two-run single in the first inning to give the Rams all the runs they would need. He also hit an RBI single in the sixth inning off Josh Outsen. They broke it open with a bases-loaded walk, RBI single by Ryan Osborne and a HBP of Kenneth Johntry.
The Golden Eagles responded with a victory in Game Two 5-1 behind Brandon Lubrano’s gem. He fired the 7-inning CG, striking out six in a one-hitter.Joe Calabrese got the scoring started in the fourth inning with an RBI single. In his next turn at bat, he smacked two-run HR in the sixth inning to provide Lubrano with a little breathing room. In the seventh, Anthony Bonilla hit a sacrifice fly to score Nick Girardi and Bob Keating hit an RBI double to score Girardi once again. Lubrano finished the deal and got the Golden Eagles back on track with the victory and improve to 11-8 overall.
