They might only be hitting .237 as a team, but the NYIT Bears were led by three home runs yesterday (Joe Daru, Louis Mele, Jake Lebel), in their DH sweep of the University of Maine.
They improve to 13-15 on the season and are only one win shy of matching last season’s win total.
In Game One, Matt Diaz fired five shutout innings with seven strikeouts and two walks.
The game was scoreless until that point when Mele smacked his fourth HR of the season to give the Bears a 3-0 lead and bring his RBI total to 21.
They tacked on more in the seventh when Joe Daru hit his third HR of the season and Frank Sanacore drove in Mele with an RBI single.
Maine scored three runs to make it a close game, but Lebel’s two-run blast all but put the game away in the eighth. Mele added another RBI single for good measure.
Timothy Milligan closed it out in the ninth.
They won the second game 4-2 behind Elias Martinez‘s 7 inning complete game gem. He scattered five hits, two runs, struck out three without walking a batter.
The Bears smacked 11 hits–three by Anthony Caradonna, two each by Joe Daru, Matt DeAngelis and Frank Sanacore.
They will play a DH against Maine again today as they look to get back to .500.
