Yesterday was a very rough day for Long Island teams.
Division-I:
Hofstra held an early 3-1 lead in College Station, but it did not last long. Hunter Melton smacked two home runs and Ronnie Gideon hit a grand slam to put an exclamation point on a 15-4 victory for the Aggies. The two teams will try and get at least 5 innings in today before the rain comes. Forecast is calling for a 50% beginning at game time. Bowie Matteson will be on the hill for the Pride as they try to escape Texas with their first victory of the season.
Stony Brook was leading 4-0 with converted closer Cameron Stone on the hill and 6-3 in the seventh against Wofford but a six-run seventh inning against Chad Lee and Bret Clarke contributed to a 9-8 win by Wofford.
They will be back in action today in South Carolina against USC-Upstate at 2:00 PM.
NYIT split with Coppin State yesterday. They won 5-2 behind Matt Diaz‘s solid five shutout innings. The offense was led by Joe Daru‘s 3-for-5 performance, he scored two runs and drove in a run. James Bulva added two hits, run scored and RBI. Jeff Tabares smacked two hits and also drove in a run. Chris Johnson recorded the 2.2 inning save. They lost the second game 10-4. Junior transfer Frank Valentino had a rough outing–3.2 IP, 7 R, 5 ER, 5 hits. On a bright note, Joe Daru went 4-for-4 with two RBI. They will complete their three game set today at 10:30 am.
Division-II
Molloy split with Pfeiffer University, losing 2-1 and winning 7-2. In the loss, Ron Bauer threw 7 terrific innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out five and walking only two. It’s a great sign that the junior began his season on a bright note. Unfortunately, the offense did not muster much. They compiled six hits, with Deilyn Guzman being the lone player to record a multi-hit game. The second game was an easy victory. They opened up a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI single by Angelo Navetto, RBI double by Nick Gonchar, RBI single by Anthony Alberghina and bases-clearing triple by Christian Todd. Starter Bobby Kelly was terrific–he threw 6.0 IP, allowed two runs on five hits and three walks for his first victory of 2016. Sean Gordon closed it out with a shutout seventh. They will finish up their series today at 1 PM on Misenheimer, NC.
Division-III:
Old Westbury held a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning. Starter Jeremy Charles had a stellar showing in his Panther debut–6.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 hits, 9 K, 1 BB. Unfortunately, the bullpen could not hold the lead. Michael Mule smacked the go-ahead three-run home run to put Stevens Institute up for good. Daniel Aguilo was saddled with the loss. Michael Cardino had two hits for the Panthers, who only had six on the day. They will be back in action next Friday at Kean University.
