Despite the season technically starting last weekend with a four-game set between LIU Post and Limestone, today feels more like Opening Day with two teams kicking off their season and two more tomorrow..
I am writing this from College Station, TX in preparation to Hofstra’s 6:30 PM (7:30 ET) first pitch against No. 4 ranked Texas A &M. The Pride will throw Alec Eisenberg (5-4, 5.83 ERA last season) and the Aggies will counter with senior Kyle Simonds (3-2, 2.39 ERA last season).
Other Games:
Stony Brook vs Dayton: 12:00 PM-
This game will take place in Spartanburg, S.C. Dayton is coming off a 16-38 record last year. The Sea Wolves are fresh off winning the America East conference and finishing third in the regionals. They will have senior Tyler Honahan on the bump, backed by a terrific offense led by reigning Baseball on the Island’s MVP Jack Parenty, Johnny Caputo, Andruw Gazzola, Casey Baker and a number of others.
(Saturday Feb. 20) NYIT vs Coppin State DH 10:30 AM, 2 PM-
It was a tough year in 2015 for Coppin State, they won only three games. NYIT will have a chance to start the year off on a positive note. Look for the Bears to start transfer Frank Valentino in Game 1 and rely on their leadoff man Joe Daru to set the table for their boppers–Louis Mele and Jake Lebel.
(Saturday Feb. 20) Molloy vs Pfeiffer University DH 12:00 PM, 3 PM
Molloy will be counting on a potent offense led by Deilyn Guzman, Kevin Podell, Angelo Navetto, Michael Rahn and a host of others. The pitching staff will be counting on bounce back years from Bobby Kelly and Ron Bauer. They will be looking for Anthony Catinella to tap into the potential that enabled him to go undefeated his senior year in high school. Pfeiffer is off to a 1-6 start this season, but five of the six losses were extremely close games.
