Much like the 2015 Kansas City Royals were able to avenge last year’s World Series defeat at the hands of the San Francisco Giants, Kyle Young and St. Dominic’s will be looking for a similar path to the top.

After losing a 1-0 heart breaker in Game 1 of the best of 3, they were shutout 10-0 in the series clincher. Young, a 6’10” left handed pitcher headed to Hofstra next fall, is prepared for his team to take the next step.

“Making it to CHSAA finals was a fun experience at the time,” said the flame thrower, “but coming up short really burned a fire in me that I still have, and I don’t see it going away until we get back there next year and win,” he added.

That is the type of fire that was a common theme among the Royals. Eric Hosmer was the extreme–he stated that he didn’t leave his hotel for three days before heading home after the season. The GM Dayton Moore and CF Lorenzo Cain made similar comments, stating that the anger over the previous year would not go away until they won it all.

Fortunately, they made it happen right away–ending a 30-year title drought for Kansas City.

The title drought has not been nearly as long for St. Dominic’s, who won it all in 2009. That was the year that future MLB draft pick Kyle Hansen led a rotation that allowed virtually nothing. He was joined by John Yohe and Chris Dragone to form a solid trio.

Young went a step further in regards to his fire from within.

“Coming up short 100 percent made me personally, and the team as a whole who is still here, hungrier for next year and we can’t wait to start up the journey again in the spring,” he said.

He will be looking to emulate the success of his favorite big league pitchers Randy Johnson and Chris Sale. These are pitchers that utilize their size to not only intimidate the opponent but also throw from an arm angle that creates deception and gives their slider an impossible amount of break.

While Young is not quite in that category, he is throwing an 88+ MPH fastball at high school batters in a wood bat league which could yield some similar results to that off Sale and Johnson.

Keep an eye out for Young who–with his combination of pitchability and anger–can put up some staggering numbers in 2016.
