Danny Burawa Recalled by Atlanta Braves, Throws Two Shutout Innings in Debut

Lost in the shuffle of the slew of Long Islanders making an impact in pro ball this season has been Danny Burawa. The Rocky Point grad, and former St. John’s closer, originally made his MLB debut with the New York Yankees this season on June 21 when he allowed four ER in 0.2 IP against the Detroit Tigers.

On August 5, he was designated for assignment by the Yankees and scooped up by the Atlanta Braves. During his stint with the Triple-A affiliate Gwinnett Braves he threw 64.2 IP, struck out 57, walked 32, compiled a 2.64 ERA and 1.21 WHIP.

He was promoted when the rosters expanded on September 1 and made his team debut that night against Miami. He struck out four in two shutout innings. In the ninth, he struck out Martin Prado, Justin Bour and Marcell Ozuna consecutively.

Burawa has a violent, whipping arm action that makes him incredibly tough on right handed batters. That, plus the fact that he works in the 92-94 MPH range with the fastball and can touch 98. He also throws a slider in the 84-87 MPH range.

He will turn 27 on December 30, so he is not necessarily very young, but he has the chance to stick around in the big leagues and will be given many chances with the Braves playing out the string in 2015.
