Here’s a quick rundown of some of the recent draftees that hail from, or played their college ball in, Long Island.

Max Almonte

Age: 23

Team: State College Spikes (A-Short)

Key Stats: 0-1, 3.68 ERA, 7.1 IP, 2 K, 1.23 WHIP

Steven Ascher

Age: 21

Team: Charlotte Stone Crabs (A-Advanced)

Key Stats: 7-2, 2.32 ERA, 66.0 IP, 36 Ks, 1.20 WHIP

Notes: He has struggled after a 7-0 start, but he is progressing very quickly. High-A ball after only one year in the minors is impressive.

Tyler Badamo

Age: 23

Team: Brooklyn Cyclones (A-Short)

Key Stats: 2-6, 3.75 ERA, 57.2 IP, 51 K, 1.02 WHIP

Notes: The record is deceiving–he has pitched very well and received no run support. He should probably be 5-5 based on the independent pitching results and his WHIP and K numbers are great.

Cliff Brantley

Age: 22

Team: GCL Blue Jays (Rookie)

Key Stats: 29 G, .250 AVG, .305 OBP, 3 HR, 4 SB

Notes: He has not shown great plate discipline with only six BB and 20 K but he has shown some power. He will be 23 at the end of the season, I would like to see him promoted before season’s end.

Brendan Butler

Age: 22

Team: AZL Athletics

Key Stats: 0-2, 6.14 ERA, 14.2 IP, 9 K, 1.70 WHIP

Notes: It has not been a great start to his pro career, but he has been playing in a rough pitcher’s environment.

Pat Cantwell

Age: 25

Team: Round Rock Express (Triple-A)

Key Stats: 65 G, .186 AVG, .256 OBP, 3 HR, 21 RBI

Notes: He has not gotten the bat going yet but his defense is so strong that he still warranted a promotion to Triple-A.

Keith Couch

Age: 25

Team: Pawtucket Sox (Triple-A)

Key Stats: 4-10, 6.42 ERA, 116.1 IP, 56 K, 1.63 WHIP

Jimmy Duff

Age: 21

Team: St. Luice Mets (A-Advanced)

Key Stats: 2-2, 3.40 ERA, 47.2 IP, 46 K, 1.17 WHIP

Notes: Very impressive start to his career for the young Garden City native.

Nick Fanti

Age: 18

Team: GCL Phillies (Rookie)

Key Stats: 1-0, 1.80 ERA, 10.0 IP, 13 K, 0.90

Notes: He is still technically a senior in HS, he has plenty of time to develop so they will take it uber-conservative with him.

Charles Galiano

Age: 21

Team: Helena Brewers (Rookie)

Key Stats: 16 G, .235 AVG, .281 OBP, 5 RBI

Brian Hunter

Age: 22

Team: Dayton (A-Full)

Key Stats: 5-3, 2.20 ERA, 32.2 IP, 41 K, 1.19 WHIP

Notes: His season is over after requiring Tommy John Surgery.

Tim Ingram

Age: 21

Team: Hudson Valley Renegades

Key Stats: 1-1, 1.16 ERA, 23.1 IP, 15 K, 1.03 WHIP

Notes: What a tremendous start for Ingram, who threw over 100 IP and carried OW to the Skyline Conference championship. He has shown some great pitchability.

Travis Jankowski

Age: 24

Team: El Paso (Triple-A)

Key Stats: 97 G, .335 AVG, .413 OBP, 32 SB

Notes: He is knocking on the door to the big leagues. Wouldn’t be surprised if he was called up on Sept. 1

Steve Laurino

Age: 22

Team: Aberdeen Iron Birds

Key Stats: 53 G, .273 AVG, .355 OBP, 2 HR, 21 RBI

James Lomangino

Age: 23

Team: Asheville Tourists (A-Full)

Key Stats: 2-3, 4.43 ERA, 62.1 IP, 52 K, 1.52 WHIP

Ryan McCormick

Age: 21

Team: Boise Hawks (A-Short)

Key Stats: 0-1, 4.80 ERA, 30.0 IP, 14 K, 1.57 WHIP

Dillon McNamara

Age: 23

Team: Charleston Riverdogs

Key Stats: 2-0, 3.53 ERA, 51.0 IP, 41 K, 1.45 WHIP

Chris Pike

Age: 22

Team: Bowling Green Hot Rods (A-Full)

Key Stats: 9-6, 3.08 ERA, 111.0 IP, 68 K, 1.18 WHIP

Alec Sole

Age: 22

Team: Bowling Green Hot Rods

Key Stats: 50 G, .328 AVG, .377 OBP, 1 HR, 21 RBI

Notes: He has really improved over his pro debut last season. He is not hitting with power but as a middle infielder, that will not be asked of him.

Jake Thomas

Age: 22

Team: GCL Blue Jays

Key Stats: 38 G, .260 AVG, .399 OBP, 3 HR, 20 RBI

Notes: Notice the incredible OBP. For a young player in his pro debut, that is remarkably rare to show such discipline.

Nick Tropeano

Age: 24

Team: Salt Lake Bees (Triple-A)

Key Stats: 3-6, 4.63 ERA, 89.1 IP, 96 K, 1.46 WHIP

Notes: He had a cameo in the big leagues earlier this season and he could get another shot with C.J. Wilson’s injury and Matt Shoemaker’s ineffectiveness.

Bryan Verbitsky

Age: 23

Team: Lake Elsinore Storm (A-Advanced)

Key Stats: 1-2, 2.63 ERA, 54.2 IP, 59 K, .221 AVG
