Catching Up With 2016 Top Prospect Sam Kessler

by Eric Moskowitz

The recruiting process is always a stressful time for players entering their senior seniors–especially for a top-notch player like Sam Kessler.

He ultimately chose to attend West Virginia after he graduates in 2016 from Mount Sinai High School. Kessler is currently ranked as the No. 12 prospect in the ’16 class by Blue Chip Prospects.

Our reporter, Eric Moskowitz, sat down with him and discussed some things pertaining to his career.

How is the recruiting process going so far?

Recruiting went well–It got a little crazy at the end, but I’m going to a great school.

What people have been the most influential during your baseball career so far?

Probably my pitching coach Joe Valentine, my travel coach Mark Cuesta and my dad.

How do you feel about beating Billy Koch’s strikeout record for the Bayside Yankees?

It’s a tough record but I think if I put enough work in the offseason it can be broken.

Playing for the Bayside Yankees what has been your favorite trip so far?

My favorite trip so far would have to be the Connie Mack World Series. It was a great experience, a lot of fans and great competition.

As of right now, what do you feel is your best pitch?

My best pitch would have to be my slider. I have been throwing it since I was 9-years-old. Coach Fidel Colon taught me to throw it.

Do you want to be a starter or a reliever in college?

In college I would love to be a closer.  Having the game depend on you in the clutch and getting the final out to make the home town fans go crazy and having the away fans go to bed depressed.
