The Minnesota Twins selected Maryland closer and Holy Trinity graduate, Alex Robinson, with their fifth round pick on Tuesday.
Robinson had a decorated career at Maryland, highlighted by this season in which he compiled a 1.63 ERA and saved three games with 32 K’s in 27.2 IP.
I had a chance to speak with him about the draft process and leading Maryland to the Super Regionals and here’s what he had to say.
What have the past few days been like leading up to the draft and not knowing if you’d be drafted?
The past few days have been exciting. I was not nervous if I was going to be drafted–more anxious to have my name called and find out what team would be taking me. I tried to focus on all my teammates that have the same opportunity as I do to play professional baseball as well because without them I wouldn’t have had the opportunity at all.
What was it like making it to the Super Regionals consecutive years and having such success at Maryland?
It was an amazing accomplishment making it to consecutive super regionals. In 2014, the first year Maryland has been to a super regional was a historic year for the program. It’s good to know that the program is moving in the right direction. My success at Maryland I have to give credit to my teammates. We’re a close group of guys that push each other to become the best we can be and expand our levels of uncomfortablity. Without them it’s tough to imagine getting to this point.
Who are some athletes you look up to?
Some athletes I look up to are Kelvin Herrera, reliever for the Kansas City Royals, and Jake Stinnett, former teammate and roommate at the University of Maryland and current professional in the Chicago Cubs organization. Herrera because of his ability and mindset on the field I feel mirrors my own. Stinnett because he was a leader and set the example for the pitching staff and did things the right way, as well as being a mentor for myself.
Do you come from an athletic family?
My family is pretty athletic. My father is 6’2″ and played baseball and was a swimmer. My brother is 6’6″ and plays baseball and basketball. Both are athletic.
Was baseball always your No. 1 sport?
Baseball was always my number one sport because I excelled in it and liked winning. I always found myself on the right side of games when playing baseball. I love winning and baseball was a sport I had a lot of success in.
