Long Island Championships Set

With  Division winning the Nassau County A crown and Bayport-Blue Point winning the Suffolk A crown, the two teams will face off in the Long Island Championship for the second straight year.

The game is set for noon tomorrow at NYIT in Old Westbury. Last season, BBP took the crown with a 3-0 victory led by Jack Piekos‘ five-hit shutout. He is currently with Maryland in the Super Regionals.

Division enters the game with a 24-4 record. They just cruised past North Shore in a two game sweep of the Nassau County A championship. James Varela led the team with eight victories, while Kieran McLaughlin had five and Anthony Papa had three.

For the Phantoms of BBP, they are coming off their third straight Suffolk A Crown and are looking for a three-peat as State Champions. They are 21-5 and are led by P.J. Weeks‘ seven victories–all shutouts. He shutout Shoreham-Wading River 1-0 in the Suffolk Championship. Jake Liberatore has five wins—including game one of the Shoreham series.

It should definitely be a great game, I would favor BBP because of their comfort level of being at this stage.

As for the Class AA, Macarthur (20-6) just cruised past Oceanside by the scores of 7-4 and 4-3. Bobby Lewis was the winning pitcher in the clinching game, he now has five wins on the season. Jack Wall has eight wins, including the first game of the series. He had a tremendous season and you can imagine he would be on the hill tomorrow.

Connetquot just won the series against Ward Melville with a 6-0 shutout behind Travis Bruinsma‘s 12th win of the season. He will most likely only be available in relief with only one day of rest after 90-pitches. John Hennge will only be on two days of rest. They accounted for 18 of the teams’ 24 wins. They may go with Tim Monti, who last recorded a victory on May 5th against Central Islip.

They will certainly look for their offense to provide the punch, as they have all season. With Marc Wangenstein, Dave Brehm, Brandon Morse and Aaron Gagliano in the middle of the order, they can win with their high-octane bats alone that averaged 7.8 runs per game.

I haven’t seen MacArthur play this season, so it’s impossible for me to make an accurate assessment but it promises to me a great game at Dowling at 4 pm.
