For the first time since the magical run of 2012, the Stony Brook Sea Wolves have won the America East title.
It took an amazing comeback on Saturday, too as they defeated UMBC 16-11. They trailed 7-0 in the first inning after the bats of UMBC roughed up Ryley MacEachern.
In the ensuing inning they scored a tournament record 11 runs thanks to RBI hits by Malcolm Nachmanoff and Toby Handley and a slew of walks and errors.
The scoring wasn’t done after that. UMBC answered with two in the bottom of the second and that’s when Tim Knesnik came in to put out the fire. He ended up recording the victory, throwing four innings of relief while allowing three runs on six hits and four walks with two strikeouts.
In the fourth, the Sea Wolves tacked on two more on RBI hits by Casey Baker and Jack Parenty.
After UMBC chipped away with single runs in the fourth and fifth, the Sea Wolves opened it up in the eighth on a wild pitch and RBI single by Bobby Honeyman.
Chad Lee and Cameron Stone combined for four shutout innings of relief to put the UMBC bats to rest. Stone was named the tournament’s MVP.
In this wild game the Sea Wolves smacked 19 hits and drew 16 walks. Jeremy Giles went 1-for-1 with six walks. Rob Chavarria went 1-for-2 with five walks. Connor Staskey,UMBC reliever, threw 114 pitches over five innings and allowed 16 base runners and threw two wild pitches. It was far from a pitcher’s duel.
They will now wait to find out who they will play in the regionals. That information will be announced on Monday.
The Sea Wolves are now 33-14-1 and are certainly a force to be reckoned with in the region.
