If Dowling had plans to advance through the East Regional, the route just got a bit harder. They were defeated 5-2 this afternoon by Stonehill College and now face elimination.
Kyle DeMeo got the start for the Golden Lions and he was touched up in the first inning for a three spot. After allowing a double, issuing a walk and a hit by pitch, he walked in a run and then allowed a two-run single to open up a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
The offense waited until the sixth to get on the board against freshman right hander Michael Young, who entered the game with a 0.59 ERA over 46 innings. After Michael Richter reached on an error that advanced him to second, and a ground out that advanced him to third, Jon Cruz hit a sac fly to get them on the board.
The Skyhawks got it back in the bottom of the sixth on a leadoff home run to increase the lead to 4-1.
They tacked on one in the seventh to open up a 5-1 lead on three consecutive singles off Dominick Danetti.
Young pitched 7.1 innings, allowing just one ERA (which actually made his ERA increase) and struck out four batters while allowing seven hits.
Michalel Rizzitello was the lone Golden Lion to compile multiple hits.
DeMeo suffered his second loss of the season against four wins.
They will have to face Franklin Pierce (46-3) tomorrow morning at 11 am.
