After waiting nearly 2 hours to begin the game, Old Westbury took down No.2 Baldwin Wallace University 7-5 behind Tim Ingram‘s gutsy 132 pitch, 14-strikeout performance.
“I was a little tired,” said the senior right hander. “I threw a lot of pitches and every pitch was max effort because I was throwing against a very good offensive team,” he added.
Fortunately, the offense came to play today.
Old Westbury took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles by Dean Sheridan and Jonathan Pagan. Sheridan came around to score on a wild pitch.
Ingram was downright nasty in the first four innings, striking out eight batters and allowing only two hits.
The Panthers opened it up with three more runs in the fifth thanks to an RBI triple by Pagan that scored Sheridan, who got hit by a pitch. Pagan scored on a wild pitch for the second run of the inning. Tommy Zeigen walked and stole second, then came around to score on an RBI single by Brandon Stein to open up a commanding 6-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Ingram struck out two more in a 1-2-3 inning to make it 10 strikeouts through five and things were going smoothly.
Two innings later, the Yellow Jackets made some noise with a three-spot. Three hits, one walk and one costly errors allowed the runs to score.
The Panthers scored one in the ensuing inning on an error off the bat of Christian Faust to score Jake Coners.
In the eight, a tired Ingram went back out and allowed a single, followed by an RBI triple and a ground out to cut the lead to 7-5.
He was able to bear down and strike out the next two batters to finish his night with 14-strikeouts and in line for the victory.
Head Coach Rod Stephan turned to freshman Nick Schoen, who avoided any drama by closing out an easy 1-2-3 inning for the victory.
Pagan led the offensive attack with three hits, Coners had two hits and scored twice.
With the victory, the Panthers are now 26-11 and will face No. 6 RPI tomorrow night. First pitch is slated for 7:45 pm once again, but that will probably be pushed back at least an hour considering there are three games before that.
Also, with his 14 strikeouts, Ingram now has 92 on the season and leads all Long Island pitchers.
