Just two days after pulling off an upset of No. 1 ranked Pace, Adelphi was defeated, 2-1, by Stonehill and now face elimination in the Northeast-10 conference playoffs.
Staring pitcher Jonathon Mulford entered the game unblemished at 7-0 but allowed a first inning run on an RBI single. In the second inning, Stonehill increased their lead to 2-0 on a sac fly to right fielder Nick Zito.
That was all that Mulford would allow, he went eight innings, allowing just two runs (one ER) on two hits while walking three and striking out six. He was tagged with his first loss of the season.
The Panthers outhit Stonehill 5-3, but also committed three errors. In the second inning, Ray Triano‘s error led to Stonehill’s second run which was ultimately the difference in the game.
Freshman Kory Cassara. who was just named to the Northeast-10 All-Rookie team, had two hits for the Panthers including one to lead off the ninth inning.
The following batter, Nick Zito, singled to left center but was nailed trying to extend to a double. It was a costly mistake with the middle of the order at the plate. The following batter, Rob Vani, hit a sac fly to RF which cut the lead to 2-1 but the Panthers were unable to do any further damage, as Tyler Murphy struck out to end the ballgame.
Ironically, the Panthers also did this last season. They knocked off the No. 1 ranked Southern Connecticut State Owls in the single-elimination round before losing the first game of the Northeast-10 tournament. They did win consecutive elimination games but lost to Southern New Hampshire to close the door on 2014.
They will be back in action tomorrow morning at 10 am with their backs against the wall.
