The Mets are a pitching rich organization and arguably their top prospect is Stony Brook native and Ward Melville grad Steven Matz.
The 6’4″ left hander flirted with a no-hitter last night in his fourth start of the season. He held Reno hitless until the seventh inning when former Met outfielder Nick Evans broke it up with a double. Matz ended up completing the inning and finished with a line of seven IP, two hits, one BB and five strikeouts. It was a stellar outing for the Long Island native.
He is now 2-1 on the season with a 2.01 ERA. He has held the opposition to a .173 average and owns a 1.12 WHIP.He will certainly pitch with the big league club at some point this season but there is not currently an opening in the rotation.
If there is one aspect he must improve on, he has 12 walks in just 22 innings but five of those came in his first outing.
