Molloy was swept in a DH today by Mercy by the scores of 4-3 and 5-3, but that should not overshadow the spectacular pitching performance by ace Shea Spitzbarth in the first game.
The junior from Staten Island pitched the first 10 innings in the 14-inning marathon. He allowed no ER, only three hits and five walks while striking out 17 batters. He threw 143 pitches. On the season, he now has a 1.80 ERA over 55 innings with 83 strikeouts while holding opposing batters to a .204 average.
He nearly got the win, as Molloy scored a run in the 11th inning on an RBI single by Anthony Alberghina but the bullpen could not hold the lead. In the bottom of the 14th, Mercy won it on a sac fly to conclude the 3:28 marathon.
The loss was incredibly painful for the Lions’ playoff chances as they are now 7-11 in the conference and four games behind Bridgeport.
They have now lost four in a row and will be playing Senior Day tomorrow at noon. They have six more conference games left–concluding with four against Dowling next weekend.
