Ward Melville graduate and sophomore left-handed pitcher for UConn Anthony Kay will pitch for Team USA this summer. They will play during June and July and will take on the best talent across the world.
He has six wins already, compiling a 1.29 ERA over 70 innings with 68 strikeouts and a 0.89 WHIP while holdiong the opposition to a .189 average.
“I am extremely excited for this chance to play alongside the best players in college baseball against some of the world’s finest competition,” Kay told the UCONN team wesbite. “We are remaining focused on our season here at UConn but I know this will be a terrific opportunity for me and for our program.”
During 2012, Kay won the Paul Gibson Award which is given to the best pitcher in Suffolk County. He allowed 0 runs in 55 innings.
The following season he led Ward Melville to the first Long Island Championship in program history– he was the winning pitcher in the Suffolk County title game and he capped the season by getting drafted in the 29th round by the Mets.
Kay is ineligible to get drafted this season as per MLB rules. He will be eligible next season, where he will certainly be a top-round pick assuming he continues to impress at this level.
