The sun was shining on William J Bonomo field on Wednesday when the Adelphi Panthers won their second straight game–this time a 3-2 pitcher’s duel against Kutztown University Bears.
The Panthers used six pitchers to navigate through the game–with Kyle Garrison earning the win with two shutout innings of relief. He was backed by an offense that jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fifth but was dormant after that.
They produced only three hits, with Donato Signore accounting for two of those.
The Bears stepped to the plate first. The first two batters, Brady Carras, and Brady McNab, were set down in order. Their third hitter, Ryan Cox got on base via a single to right/center field. He was quickly sent to the bench when Adelphi’s catcher, Camden Orologio, gunned him out at second base. The throw beat the runner by a country mile. Vincent Sharkey and Kory Cassarawere set down in order in the panthers half of the inning. First baseman, Rob Vani got on via an error by the Bears shortstop, Brandon Cholish. The inning ended when DH, Nick Zito popped out to Cholish at short. The Bears second inning went by in a flash with a fly to Vani at first, a grounder to short and a strike out.
The bottom of the second meant runs for the Panthers. The inning started when third basemen, Donato Signore slammed a double over the lunging center fielder. After a strike out by catcher, Orlogio, right fielder, Alex Zykoff hit a slow roller to short stop, Cholish. Signore scored on the play, after he moved to third on a balk. Center fielder, John Fogarty slammed a triple into the right fields corner, but was left at third when second basemen, Zack Levinson hit a chopper to second base.
After a leadoff single by Cholish, the Bears went down in order to end the top of the third. The Panthers followed suit in the bottom of the frame when they were retired, 1,2,3. The top of the fourth produced more of nothing for the Bears. The bottom of the inning was much more eventful for the Panthers. After a walk by Zito, Signore lined a single to left field. Both men were advanced on a sac bunt by Orlogio. After a ground ball to Daulton Fidler in which the first basemen, was unable to stay on the base, the bases were loaded for centerfielder, John Fogarty. He grounded into a fielder’s choice, but the run from third scored. The inning ended on a spectacular sliding catch in foul territory by Cholish.
After a walk to lead off the top of the fifth inning, the Bears sat down quietly again. The Adelphi half of the inning began with a marathon of an at bat. Vincent Sharkey began his at bat with three straight balls. The next eleven pitches all were fouled off by Sharkey. Eventually, he was able to draw a walk. He was soon sent back to the dugout when he was thrown out by the catcher, Derian Sarlat, from his knees. Cassara reached base in his at bat via a walk. When he attempted to steal second base, the catcher over threw the bag by a mile and Cassara advanced to third on that error. As Cassara made his way to third, the right fielder, Brady Carras over threw the base and the ball ended up in the Bears dugout. Cassara scored on the dead ball. This made the score, 3-0 in favor of the Panthers.
The sixth inning went off without incident for each team, as did the seventh. The most exciting things to come out of with innings was a beautifully turned, 1-6-3 double pay by the Bears, and an absolute rocket off the bat of Ray Triano, which just fell short of the fence– as it was caught on the warning track in center field.
The top of the eight was a worrying time for Panthers fans. After an opposite field single by the pinch hitter, Ricky Gorrell, Sarlat flew out to right field. Then, Tom Romano slammed a single to left field. This was followed up by a strike out by Brandon Hickey and then a single over the short stops head by Cox, to score Gorrell. Romano was scored via a bloop single by Drew DeShong. That would be all the damage the Bears made. The score was now 3-2, Panthers. The Panthers’ Nick Batas came in for the save, with Mike Cranston unavailable due to throwing three innings on Tuesday. Batas threw a clean 1-2-3 inning, thus securing a victory for Dom Scala and the Panthers.
nt down in order in the bottom half of the eighth.
“I went with the fast ball today” said starting pitcher Mike Tarpey. “It’s usually the off speed stuff.” Tarpey started the game for the Panthers and had a strong two and two thirds innings. He totaled five first pitch strikes out of ten batters he faced. The Panthers used six pitchers in the contest today, as compared to the Bears four. The Bears totaled eight hits with just two runs, while the Panthers had three runs on just three runs. The Bears made four errors, which was the reason for their demise in the game today.
