It may be early but today’s win was a huge win for Harborfields. Entering the game with a record of 0-4, Harborfields simply could not afford to fall back anymore in the standings.
Down 3-0 in the fourth inning, Harborfields had their backs against the walls, but chipped away.
By moving people over with bunts and driving people in with timely sac flies and with some help from the Islip defense, Harborfields was able to tie up the game 3-3.
In the bottom of the last inning, with bases loaded Jesse Lankeaux got up to the plate with the infield in and hit a ground ball to second base. The second baseman did not field it cleanly and Robert Dluginsky scored the game winning run scored on the error.
Harborfields starter Dillon Schaefer delivered: he pitched a complete game for the Tornados. He relied heavily on his fastball, which had good sink on it and mixed in a few curve balls, which kept the batters honest.
Kevin Colgan also went the distance for Islip. He was crafty and used different pitches to keep the batters off balance all game long.
Head Coach Casey Sturm said:
” It was an exciting game and I’m proud of the way my guys battled back after being in a hole down 3-0 early. Dillon put the team on his back and we were able to scrap our way back into the game. I love to see our guys executing sac bunts and sac flies with the thought of bettering the team before the individual. Today was the first day we wore our hats with the initials AO for Audrea O’Connor and AD for Audrey Davis, the mothers of our senior shortstop and junior catcher respectively. They passed away a few months ago and it’s a great feeling to honor them with these hats. They were certainly on our mind as we got our first W.”
