The New Haven Chargers came back from a 2-0 deficit against Adelphi and won it on a walk-off single by St. Dominic’s graduate Jack Zagaja.

“I had a long at bat,” said Zagaja. “I fouled off curveballs and fastballs. Saw a changeup, smacked it up the middle,” he added.

The victory, plus the second game of the double header put Adelphi further in a hole. They now stand at 4-9 on the season.

The Panthers got off to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a single by Alex Zykoff which scored Donato Signore and Robert Vani.

Starter Jonathon Mulford was solid as usual–six innings, two ER, two BB, four K’s. He gave way to Nick Batas after allowing a leadoff double in the seventh inning. Batas got an out in the seventh inning. Ricky Van Allen came in and fired 2.2 shutout innings to bring the game into extras.

Senior Mike Cranston came on in the 11th and threw two shutout innings before getting into trouble in the 12th. He allowed a leadoff single, and the following batter got down a successful sac bunt. After the next batter walked, Zagaja laced a single to give the Chargers the walk-off victory.

In the second game, Zagaja got the scoring going with a two-run home run off TJ Santiago. The Chargers added to their lead with an RBI single by TJ Riccio and an RBI groundout.

The Panthers got on the board with an RBI single by Signore, who also hit a sac fly in the sixth inning, but that was as close as they would get.

The bright spot for the Panthers was reliever Michael Ceparano striking out four over two shutout innings.

Also, Vani went 3-for-4 at the plate and Vincent Sharkey had two hits off the bench.

Vincent Aprea, graduate of Comsewogue, received the victory for the Chargers despite not striking out a batter over six innings.

The two teams will be back in action tomorrow in New Haven at 3:30 pm.
