March 27 Recap

It was a slow, but action-packed day for college teams. Despite only three teams in action, there was an extra inning game and a terrific pitcher’s duel.

Division-I:

Hofstra was defeated by Villanova 3-1. The offense only mustered six hits against opposing starter Josh Harris, despite drawing four walks and striking out only once. The Pride’s starter, Chris Bonk, threw eight innings, allowing three runs on 11 hits while striking out three.

Villanova got on the board in the first inning on an RBI single. They added two runs in the sixth inning to open up their lead. The Pride’s lone run came in the bottom of the ninth on a sac fly by Eric Ferguson.

The Pride falls to 7-12. The two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon.

Division-II:

LIU Post defeated Molloy by the score of 2-1. You can read the recap here.

Dowling improved to 8-3 with a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over Dominican. They fell behind 3-0 in the top of the second inning, when starter Jon Parisi struggled mightily with his command. He walked five and allowed three ER in 1.2 innings.

The Golden Lions responded with two in the bottom of the second with some small ball. An RBI groundout by Tyler Hardison and a squeeze executed by Anthony Ferrante brought them within one run.

Andrew Sesto came on in relief for Dowling and fired 3.1 shutout innings with four strikeouts to keep his team in the game.

David Montiverdi came in and allowed a run on an RBI single to extend the lead to 4-2.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Golden Lions broke through with a three spot–thanks to RJ Going‘s RBI triple, Dan Parisi‘s RBI single and Tyler Piccolo’s sac fly.

Dominican tied it up in the ninth on a run scoring single off Robert Rose, but he ended up being the winning pitcher with a walk-off squeeze executed by Michael Rizzitello.

Going, Parisi and Rizzatello all compiled two hits for the Golden Lions.
