Yesterday was a busy day. Besides St. Patrick’s Day, there was also some action on the diamonds. Eight teams were in action and cumulatively they went 3-5…
Division-I:
Stony Brook cruised past Iona 11-2. They put it away with a seven-run second inning thanks to RBI hits by Malcolm Nachmanoff, Cole Peragine, Toby Handley, Andruw Gazzola and Johnny Caputo and Bobby Honeyman.
Chad Lee started and threw three shutout innings. Cameron Stone added two shutout innings as did Nick Brass.
Hofstra narrowly lost to Fordham 7-6. They feverishly began a comeback when they were down 6-0 in the fifth. They scored one in the fifth and five in the sixth. Brad Witkowski, who got them on the board with an RBI single also tied up the game at six with a two-run single. Unfortunately. the defense let them down in the bottom of the inning–when Fordham’s Charles Galiano (Commack ’12) reached on an error that scored the go-ahead run. Cody Olsen suffered the loss for the Pride.
NYIT defeated LIU-Brooklyn 5-4. They were leading 4-0 after five when the wheels began to come off and they allowed four runs. They were able to recapture the lead in the bottom of the eighth on an error by the 3b which scored Michael Iglesias. Joe Daru had two hits for the Bears and Anthony Martelli drove in two runs. Michael Auriemmo earned the victory for the Bears, who are 2-3 and determined to blow past last year’s win total by the end of the month.
Division-II:
Dowling was defeated 5-4 by Pace. They got out to an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Dan Parisi, They fell behind in the bottom of the first but regained the lead on a single by Chris Appell and sac fly by RJ Going in their half of the second. It stayed that way until the sixth when Pace tied it up on another RBI single. Dowling executed a double steal to take a 4-3 lead in the eighth but Pace scored two in the eighth and took the lead on a sac fly.
Jon Cruz and Rob Costanzo had two hits each for the Golden Lions, who fall to 4-2 on the season.
Adelphi was defeated by Barry 12-7. It was a wild game that featured three separate five-run innings. Barry took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first but the Panthers responded with five of their own on an RBI groundout by Rich Cambria, bases-loaded walk by Vincent Sharkey, RBI single by Kory Cassara, RBI groundout by Nick Zito and an error. The score stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth when Barry regained the lead on a run-scoring single. They broke it open with a five-spot in the seventh and one in the eighth. The Panthers scored two in the ninth on a double by Robert Vani and RBI singly by Kyle Collins.
The Panthers will conclude their Florida trip in Miami Shores today against Southern Connnecticut State at 1pm. They must sure up their defense that made six errors in the game.
Molloy was trounced 11-3 by Caldwell, whom they beat three days ago. The game was essentially over after three innings when they fell behind 6-0. Anthony Catinella received the loss–he lasted 1.1 innings allowing four ER.
The Lions did compile 10 hits–Deilyn Guzman had three, John Galanoudis, Kevin Podell and Elijan Leerdam had two.
Division-III:
Farmingdale dropped to 1-4 with a 12-10 loss Heidelberg. They have now allowed double-digit runs in four of those games. They also made five errors.
On a bright note, they had 14 hits. Shortstop Domenic Palumbo and 3b Nick Osburn had three hits. Ryan Gaffney and Michael Marino had two each.
They will play a DH today and tomorrow before heading home from Florida.
