After nine cancellations, the Dowling Golden Lions were finally able to begin their 2015 campaign. They did so with a 4-2 win over a tough New Haven team.
The Golden Lions were outhit 11-7, but it did not matter, they pushed across the runs they needed. Dylan Piscitelli drove in a run with an RBI single in the fourth inning that proved to be the game-winning run.
Cody McPartland started for the Golden Lions and he went two innings. He was on a strict pitch count because of it being the first start of the year. He allowed one run in the first, but escaped from trouble in the second inning thanks to a double play. John Parisi relieved him and threw well in relief–three scoreless innings. He recorded the victory. Andrew Sesto threw a scoreless sixth and Mike Jeannetti closed the door with three scoreless innings for the save.
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first on the sac fly, the Golden Lions responded with one of their own, off the bat of RJ Going on an 0-2 pitch. They added to their lead in the third inning when Vinny Orlando also hit a sac fly to center.
In the next inning, Dylan Piscitelli knocked an RBI single to increase the lead to 3-1.
The Chargers gave them a brief scare with a run in the top of the fifth on a double off the top of the wall by Zach Collett, but John Parisi escaped the jam with a strikeout and ground out.
Jeanetti showed some real guts by throwing three scoreless innings–in the eighth he was fortunate to avoid injury when a screaming line drive was hit back to him with runners on first and second with one out. Somehow he caught the ball, and fired to second base to complete the double play. It was that type of game for Dowling.
They will now travel to North Carolina to play five games in three days beginning on Friday.
