The University of Tampa can smack the baseball. They are the No.1 ranked team in the country and they showed LIU Post why with a 20-9 victory.
They entered the game with a .341 AVG as a team, and boosted that with a 20-hit performance. Aside from the bottom of the first, Tampa scored in every inning–including four in the third, five in the fifth and six in the eighth.
Ian Townsend went 4-for-5 with seven RBI to lead the Spartans. He hit a sac fly in the third inning, RBI single in the fourth, bases clearing triple in the fifth and a two-run triple in the eighth. He had 19 RBI already this season.
The Pioneers did put up a fight on two separate occasions. They put up a four-spot in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 5-4. When the Spartans took a commanding 14-4 lead in the seventh, they responded with a five-spot in the eighth–highlighted by Vinny Iacono’s bases-clearing triple. It was not to be, however. The Spartans put the game away with an outburst in their half of the eighth.
Joey Arena suffered the loss–he threw three innings, allowing five runs (two ER). Kevin Martin, the winning pitcher for the Spartans improves to 4-1.
LIU Post is now 0-4, while Tampa improves to 17-3. The Pioneers will take on Bloomfield College tomorrow morning at 11 a.m., looking for their first victory of the season.
