It is no easy task going into Gainesville and hanging tough with a perennial powerhouse such as the Florida Gators. The Sea Wolves did just that, losing a nailbiter 1-0, to the No. 2 ranked team in the country.
The lone run came across in the bottom half of the sixth, when J.J. Schwarz drove in Harrison Badar with an RBI double off Stony Brook starter Tim Knesnik.
Knesnik did a tremendous job of keeping one of the top offenses in the nation at bay for five shutout innings. He wiggled out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning by striking out A.J. Puk.
He breezed through the next few innings, and it wasn’t until the run scored in the sixth inning did he run into any trouble.
Matt Senk lifted him in favor of Kevin Kernan, who did a stellar job of putting out the fire in the sixth as well as tossing a scoreless seventh frame.
Unfortunately, the Sea Wolves offense could not muster anything. They compiled only three hits–one each by Rob Chavarria, Jack Parenty and Malcolm Nachmanoff.
Logan Shore was the winning pitcher for the Gators–he fired 6.1 shutout frames, allowing one hit, three walks while striking out three.
Bobby Poyner came in relief in the seventh inning and closed the door with the rare eight-out save.
The Sea Wolves drop to 2-5, the Gators improve to 8-1. The two teams will play again today at 4:00 P.M.
Tyler Honahan will be on the hill for the Sea Wolves.
