Molloy entered the ECC playoff as the No. 3 seed, and after a surprising opening round win, they ultimately had their season cut short after two losses to familiar foes.
On Thursday, Max Schonfeld threw a complete game against St. Thomas Aquinas to lead Molloy to a 6-1 to move on the winner’s bracket.
They proceeded to get crushed 12-3 by Dowling. Starter Alex Miden had a rough go of it; allowing five ER in 1.2 innings. Anthony Eichhorn relieved him and allowed four ER in 2.1 innings. At that point, it was already 9-2 in favor of Dowling.
The offense was stagnant, compiling only five hits. Kyle Van Duyne was responsible for two of the runs on a home run in the second inning.
Miden fell to 5-3 on the season, and the Lions finished their season with a record of 20-23.
One of the bright spots on the season was the emergence of freshman Ron Bauer. He finished with 46 hits and a slash line of .338/.410/.426. Also, Kevin Podell was named ECC Rookie of the Year. He compiled a slash line of .297/.360/.360.
The pitching staff was led by senior Max Schonfeld, who will be difficult to replace. He finished his career as the program leader in ERA, he’s just a steady workhorse.
They will have back Bobby Kelly, who finished his freshman year with an unbelievable 0.71 ERA in 25 innings. He allowed only 15 hits, walked 8 and held hitters to two XBH, and a .169 AVG.
They will definitely look to improve an offense that had a .334 slugging percentage and .255 average.
