Yesterday was a busy day for Long Island teams, here’s a recap:
Hofstra was defeated 14-4 by Monmouth in a game that was 5-4 in the eighth inning. Chris Harkey and Kieran Ryan allowed nine runs in their combined 1.2 innings. Graham Tebbit suffered his third loss of the season. The bright spot was Kenny Jackson’s three hit, three RBI day one day after I mentioned his disappointing season. The Pride did compile 14 hits, but left 11 men on base.
They are now 17-18, and will begin a three-game set with Northeastern on Friday.
NYIT had their game against Army cancelled due to inclement weather, no makeup date has been announced. They will travel to Hawaii this weekend for a four-game series with the hopes of improving their 4-36 record.
Molloy lost 9-7 to Dominican College to fall to 17-20 on the season. They had a 4-1 lead entering the fifth inning thanks to a wild pitch, sac fly and an RBI double by Deilyn Guzman (two hits, four RBI). The middle relief was not effective, allowing a combined five runs in 3.1 innings. Matt Castaneda suffered his third loss of the season. The pitching staff issued an unacceptable 12 walks in the game.
They were scheduled to take on Adelphi today in Garden City, but that has already been cancelled.
CW Post got annihilated 15-0 by Felician College, who is a surprising 25-17 while the Pioneers fall to 16-17. They only allowed runs in three innings but they came in the form of five, four and six run innings. Mike Castagnaro lost his first decision of the game, lasting 1.2 innings. The offense supported him with only five hits and the defense made two errors. It was a forgettable performance in all aspects.
They will look to get back to .500 on Friday at Queens, a very winnable game.
Adelphi captured an impressive 4-3 win in 11 innings on the road in Pace. They were down 2-0 after two, but Rich Mejia drove in a run to cut the deficit to 2-1. Chris Gili, graduate of Eastport-South Manor, extended the lead for Pace to 3-1 in the fifth inning. In the seventh, Kevin Hutzel reached on an error by the 2b which scored a run to make it 3-2. In the ninth, Mejia came through yet again, driving in Cliff Brantley to tie the score. Neither team scored in the 10th, but in the 11th Alex Zykoff drove in the go-ahead run and Matt Abramowitz closed the door for their 20th win of the season.
Starter John Mulford threw 7 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits. Mike Cranston , TJ Santiago, John Donnelly and Abramowitz combined to throw six shutout innings.
Their game today has already been postponed, this weekend is a crucial three-game set against New Haven, who has given the team fits in the past two seasons.
Old Westbury lost 6-4 to the United States Merchant Marines Academy to fall to 18-20 on the season. They did have a 2-0 lead early in the game on an RBI double by John Pagan, who came around to score on an error, but they were unable to hold it. Chris Vitale suffered the loss to fall to 0-4 on the season. Braylin Perez threw 3.1 shutout innings of relief, but the offense couldn’t get him a win.
The offense only had seven hits; three of which came from John Angelino, and two from Pagan.
They will get prepared for the first-round of the playoffs on Friday.
St. Joseph’s lost 12-4 to Briarcliffe. They allowed seven unearned runs due to committing five errors on defense. Thomas Moore started for the Golden Eagles and suffered his first loss of the season despite not allowing an earned run.
The offense was led by Dennis McAllister’s three hits. Joe Lynn, Anthony Andreani and Anthony Bonilla both had two hits.
They will take on Maritime in the first-round of the playoffs, which was scheduled for today but has been cancelled.
