Farmingdale State enjoyed their senior day with a sweep of St. Joseph’s. The wins allowed them to finish their conference schedule with a record of 11-5, although they will not be hosting it for the first time in several years. The games were very close; they won 6-5 in 11 innings and 5-4.
The first game was wild; St. Joe’s led 2-1 after one, it was 3-3 after two and Farmingdale led 5-3 after four. The pitchers settled in and the scored remained that way until the eighth. Mike Dolce, starter for the Rams, left after 7.1, having allowing three earned runs. The reliable Alex Weingarten came on but allowed an RBI single to Godoy. St. Joe’s tied it in the ninth on an error by the second baseman. After a scoreless 10th inning, Farmingdale won it in the 11th on an RBI single by Danny Paccione. Weingarten recorded his fourth win of the season by firing 3.2 inning, allowing one ER and striking out five. Dan DiBlasi suffered the loss for the Golden Eagles.
They took the second game 5-4 in another bizarre fashion. They trailed 4-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Stephen Szobesky had been terrific to that point keeping them in check. Ed Bergmann hit an RBI single to score Sullivan, which made it a one-run game. With one out, Frank Trionfo came in relief to put out the fire, but he allowed a walk-off two-run single to Mike Marino to complete another improbable comeback by the Rams. It is remarkable how they continuously stave off defeat in their final at bat.
Seven Rams pitchers threw in the game, with Shaun Milito recording his second victory of the season. The Rams are now 21-10 and will next play on Wednesday in the first round of the playoffs.
The Golden Eagles outhit the Rams in the game 11-8. Lynn, Diblasi, Andreani and Godoy each compiled two hits in the game. They are now 16-17 and will take on Briarcliff tomorrow in a non-conference game before playing Maritime in the playoffs on Wednesday.
Old Westbury will be hosting the Skyline Conference tournament after sweeping Maritime and finishing the regular season with a record of 12-4. They won 6-3 and 11-1. In the first game, they came back from a 3-2 ninth inning deficit with a four-spot in their last at bat. Nick Yip drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single to make Arismendy Nunez a winner after eight strong innings (14 strikeouts and one walk). Alex DiSanto locked down his third save of the season.
In the next game, Tim Ingram fired the complete game, striking out 11 against only one walk. He allowed only four hits as well and needed 89 pitches. Nick Yip 3-for-3 with three runs scored and five RBI. Jake Coners also drove in three and scored two.
They will play Friday against the winner of St. Joe’s verse Maritime.
