Suffolk County baseball opened up its regular season yesterday in a big way. Not one, not two, but three no-hitters were thrown.
In League II, Dennis Buckstein of Sachem North fired a 14-k no-no against Whitman. It was the first no-hitter in 15 years for the program. The Flaming Arrows were victorious 2-0. The lone base runner was on an error. He only needed 81 pitches to accomplish the feat.
In League III, Nick Arnold and Brent Baynon of West Islip combined to no-hit Smithtown West in a 12-0 shutout. Arnold pitched the first six innings with eight strikeouts and two walks and Baynon closed the door. It was the first no-hitter for West Islip since 2011.
Not to be outdone, in League VI, James Groark and Nick LaBella of Glenn combined to no-hit Miller Place. Groark tossed the first six innings with LaBella sealing the deal. Kevin Cooney went 3-for-4 with three RBI for Glenn.
Erik Sanchez of Central Islip almost joined the party as well. He fired a one-hit shutout against Copiague with four strikeouts as part of a 5-0 shutout.
It was quite the hitless day in Suffolk County. If it is any indication of the type of season 2014 will be, brace yourselves for some history.
