Desperately looking to avoid last year’s dismal start, the Stony Brook Sea Wolves were able to right the ship with a weekend sweep of Fordham. They are now a modest 3-6, but trending upward with plenty of season ahead of them.
Game One was a 6-0 shutout tossed by ace Frankie Vanderka. The senior fired a three-hitter, fanning 11 while walking only one batter. On offense, Kevin Courtney led the way with three hits and two RBI. Kevin Krause also drove in two runs.
The middle game was even more dominating, a 10-0 victory. Strangely enough, the Sea Wolves were scoreless in all but one of those innings. They exploded for 10 runs in the fourth inning, thanks to nine straight batters reaching base. The big blow came on a grand slam by Kevin Krause to break the game open. Brandon McNitt fired five shutout innings for his first victory of the season.
The third game was wild. The Sea Wolves were down to their final out, down by three runs in the 12th inning, when they staged an epic comeback to defeat Fordham and complete the sweep. Kevin Courtney did a walk-off double in the 14th inning. They trailed in the 9th and 12th innings before finally winning. They bashed out 16 hits, led by Courtney’s four hit day as well as Casey Baker and Robert Chavarria’s three hits. The win went to Ryley MacEachern who tossed three shutout innings.
