It wasn’t quite New York Giants defeating New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, but Maritime upset St. Joe’s in the first-round of the Skyline Conference playoffs with a 4-0 shutout. It comes as a surprise considering the track record of the teams leading up to this point. The loss means that the Golden Eagles season ends at a disappointing 16-22 record.
Maritime starter Chris Meyers tossed the complete game shutout, scattering only three hits while fanning six. He was forced to work around four errors. The only hits for St. Joe’s were by Mike Aloisio, Dan Diblasi and Anthony Gallo.
Offense was an issue for them all year long, with a team average of .239 and just 4.5 run per game.
Rob Hyde took the loss for the Golden Eagles, dropping his record to 4-3 on the season. After a rocky first inning in which he allowed four hits to begin the game, he settled into a rhythm. He finished with seven innings and two ER.
It was a subpar season for Randy Caden’s Golden Eagles, who have been accustomed to above .500 baseball. They must not only find offense next season, but also replace captain Kenny Willms bat who will be graduating.
