Zito’s Two-Run Hit Propels Adelphi Past CW Post

It had the looks of a lopsided affair in favor of CW Post after a two-run second inning which featured some sloppy defense. Additionally, the Panther starter, Nick Batas making his first collegiate start, was injured by a comebacker which forced him to leave the game.

His replacement, sophomore Mike Cranston, did a commendable job keeping CW Post at bay and allowing the Panthers an opportunity to come back. Cranston tossed three innings while yielding only one run.

John Campbell’s RBI single cut the deficit to 2-1 in favor of Post.

Matt Abromowitz pitched the next two innings and allowed two runs to make the score 4-1 entering the seventh.

Chad Houghton, rightfielder for Adelphi, knocked a two-run shot to make it a one-run game. It was Houghton’s first homer of the season.

In the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded, sophomore Nick Zito lined a shot down the left field line which scored two runs to give the Panthers the lead.

With a one-run lead Adelphi is been unbeatable with their star closer looming in the bullpen. Dillon McNamara tossed another shutout inning to make it 17 scoreless to start the year with eight saves. The school record is nine and more than one month remains.

The winning pitcher was Rick Van Allen, who fired 1.1 scoreless innings for his first collegiate win. Next up is Southern Connecticut for Adelphi.
