Saturday Recap On The Island

Farmingdale State: The Rams hosted Mount Saint Mary at Farmingdale for a Skyline Conference double header. Farmingdale had a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the eighth, when David Zilnicki hit an inside-the-park grand slam to put any realistic comeback thoughts to rest. Mike Dolce was efficient today, going 6.1 innings with six K’s, three hits and only one earned run to keep his record a perfect 3-0 on the year.
The second game of the double dip went just as well as the first for Farmingdale. In the leadoff spot, Tom Rydzewski reached base all four times he came to the plate, going 3-3 with two runs scored and a walk. Six batters in the lineup had at least one RBI to lead the Rams to a 10-1 victory. Alex Weingarten earned his first victory of the year in stylish fashion, pitching a complete game, striking out four and allowing only two base runners, one walk and one hit. Farmingdale improves to 12-9, while Mount Saint Mary’s drops to 6-9.
Old Westbury:The Panthers split a Skyline Conference doubleheader today, as they hosted St. Joseph’s College. Both games were close as the two teams tried to battle for the top spot in the conference.
Old Westbury jumped to a quick 7-0 lead in the second inning with back to back two run doubles by Brandon Stein and Brian Walsh. St. Joe’s chipped away scoring two in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth to pull within one run. The Panthers scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth, and turned out to be the difference maker, as St. Joe’s scored one run in the bottom of the ninth, falling one run short of tying it, ending 8-7.

Brian Hannigan singled up the middle to drive in Gallo, and then stole second base. Hannigan was knocked in by Anthony Andreani on another single up the middle to win the game 3-2. Walsh never earned an out in the bottom of the seventh. The Golden Eagles drop their first conference game of the year, falling to 5-1, while Old Westbury is 6-2.

Game one was all UMass Lowell, winning 9-0. Chris Pabisch lost his second game of the season, going 5.2 innings allowing just three earned runs. Ricky Van Allen gave up five runs in the seventh, but all were unearned as Adelphi combined for seven errors in the entire game.
In game two, UMass began the first inning with three runs and never giving the up, as they went on to win 9-5. Richard Mejia went 2-5 with three RBI and a run scored, but that was almost all of the Panther’s offense. Stephen Bove allowed five runs on eight hits through only three innings, losing his second game of the year. Adelphi pulled within a two run margin, but two unearned runs in the eighth inning padded the Riverhawks lead.
StonyBrook:The Seawolves traveled up to Albany today and dropped both of two in their doubleheader. They are now 9-20 overall and 4-7 in conference play.

Tim Knesnik came in the bottom of the seventh, but after a leadoff single that advanced on a wild pitch, Evan Harasta hit a walk-off single for Albany.
In game two, Albany jumped to six runs through the first three innings, lead by Nolan Gaige, going 2-5 with three RBI. Kevin Courtney continued with his hot day, going 2-3 with four RBI and scoring twice. The Seawolves pitching seemed to struggle again in this matchup, as Brandon McNitt suffered his third loss this year, going seven innings, allow six runs. StonyBrook’s rough season continues as, they hope to find some way to get back to the College World Series.
Hofstra:Hofstra took on Northeastern today, putting a nine-game winning streak on the line.
The Pride got off to a 1-0 lead in the third inning after Kenny Jackson advanced from first to third on a pickoff attempt that went past the first basemen. Jared Hammer then grounded out to first base, but allowed Jackson to score. Joe Burg held Northeastern scoreless until the fifth, and then got knocked out in the sixth allowing another run. Hofstra kept it close, until the bottom of the eighth, when Andrew Barbarino gave up two more runs to make it 4-1. The Pride were unsuccessful in getting any momentum going in the ninth and failed to extend their winning streak to 10, which was the longest in 53 years.
Molloy:The Lions hosted St. Thomas Aquenis today in a conference doubleheader that took place at StonyBrook’s home field.
Game one was a pitchers duel, as Molloy held on to a 2-1 lead from the second inning on. Alex Miden earned his second victory of the year, going seven complete innings, allowing only three hits, one run and striking out six.
Molloy’s superb pitching followed up in the second game as well, as the Lions snuck in six runs in the sixth inning to complete the two-game sweep. Out of the leadoff spot, Greg Walsh only had one hit, but driving in two runs in doing so. Matthew Metz pitch five strong innings, allowing just one run, but Patrick Brown earned the victory pitching the sixth inning, right before Molloy exploded for their six runs. Molloy is now 13-18, but 7-4 in ECC play and will go for a four-game sweep of St. Thomas tomorrow afternoon.
